Time limits?

I know that some of the characters complain if you don't go somewhere. Xzar and montaran and my first attempted run minsc complained.
Are there any other time considerations? I want to explore a good amount. Last time I got attacked by an assassin after Neshkel and I never was able to get past. So I want to be really strong this time.

Not sure how long you have before Jaheira and Khalid will split if you delay going to the mines. But there is no reason you couldn't visit some of the other surrounding areas before returning to Nashkel. OR you could return to Nashkel, check in with the mayor to get the XP and reward money (also the bounty agent if you have Prism's emeralds) and then simply leave via one of the other edges and don't approach the inn. You could do a few of the other nearby areas and then return.
You can take out Nimbul right the mines if you plan carefully. If you still need help here is one method that has worked for me**SPOILER**
Spread out and don't bunch up when you approach. Rush him with one of the party. After he casts horror, rush him with everyone else. Horror might effect the initial rusher. If not, you already have someone in his face. If it does he will only get one round to throw one of those deadly axes. If he tries to with everyone around him you will get the attack bonus for someone using a ranged weapon in melee. Also the boots of avoidance do him no good in melee, only against ranged weapons.

You can still explore the wilderness after reach Nashkel. I usually get Minsc and go on his quest as soon as I reach Nashkel, before I do the mines.

Minsc is the worst of them, if you don't go within a certain time (not sure what that is anymore) he'll attack you. The first time I played the game I had trouble finding the fortress and he killed Imoen (her icon disappeared) before I could kill him. Last auto save was corrupt and my last non-auto save was so far back I swallowed it. I've hated Minsc ever since.

Umm... isn't the Gnoll Stronghold marked on the map soon as Minsc joins the party...?

It wasn't in my case, never picked him up again in BG1, so maybe I was a victim of a glitch, still hate the evil scumbag though!

There are some time limits in the city of Baldur's Gate itself, but you'll know when you encounter them

There are a few. Khalid, Jaheira, Xzar and Montaron want you to go the Nashkel. Minsc wants you to rescue Dynaheir from the Gnoll fort and Coran wants you to kill a wyvern in Cloakwood.
Other than that I don't remember any other.
