Running KotOR on a Win7 64-bit system?

So I've heard that it's nigh on impossible to run Knights of the Old Republic on a Windows 7 64-bit OS. I've successfully played through twice on my laptop, which is a 32-bit. However, just out of curiosity (and because I want my sister to play it) I tried installing it on our family computer, which uses a 64-bit system. It installed without any trouble at all and when the game scanned the computer for hardware compatibility it yelled at me about trying to use Windows 7, but running in XP Service Pack 3 compatibility mode solved that problem. Just to test it out I started the game and got part way through the character creation when it crashed ("stopped working" according to the little prompt that popped up). I double checked the compatibility mode settings and tried again, this time making it almost all the way through the Endar Spire before it "stopped working" again.
From what I'd read previously, I was under the impression that the game wouldn't even install correctly on a 64-bit system. Did I defy the laws of reason by installing it and getting it to run, or is the running-and-crashing actually a typical outcome? I've read that people with the Steam version of the game haven't had any problems with a 64-bit system, but I'm using the old fashioned disk version. I mean, if you were careful and saved often enough you would eventually be able to muddle your way through the game, but if it were me playing I would probably give up after a few too many crashes. I'd really like my sister to get the chance to play it (preferably not on my laptop but if it came down to it I guess I could live with that) and amazingly enough she's actually interested in playing it. Are there any patches or anything that might be able to fix this?
