I tried killing the guardians on the path in the durlag tower area. They are kinda knight looking guys. Anyhow they hit my characters almost every single attack and I didn't hit them very much. Magic missile worked but I only have two mages.

Paladin 6 (adjantis) Two Handed Sword +1
Fighter 6 (khalid) Bastard Sword +1/ Dagger of Venom +2
cleric 5 thief 5 - half orc (pc) Quarterstaff +1
fighter 5 druid 5 (Jaheira) Sling +1/ Bullets +1
thief 4 mage 5 (imoen) Shortbow +1 / Arrows +1
bard 6 (Garrick) Bardsong and LightCrossbowSpeed +1 / bolts +1

Your party is quite low level for this area. The wisest choice is returning later when you're more experienced and better equipped. If you really want to fight them now starting the battle with successful backstabs for triple damage by your PC and Imoen will help.

I agree with kmonster, you are a bit low level for DT. I usually leave it until I've done everything else in the game except kill Sarevok.

The guardians are tough, but there's even worse inside the tower, and you need a thief with high level trap detection/removal and lock picking. There are a lot of potions of master thievery etc. inside the tower, but nothing beats native skill.

If you are a solo thief with most of your points in find traps and and unlock, this can really bump up your experience. I have gone in at level one and come out at level four or five! I think it was five, but am not sure. The thing is that as a thief, you can sneak past the powerful guys and just do the easier stuff. Having the potion from upstairs in Candlekeep helps as some traps are deadly if you fail to find them. Use oil of speed, potion of perception and potion of master thievery in conjuction, and you can take the dungeon on up until giving Love the wine. Then carry on and come back later.

If you are not a thief, then pick up Imoen and have her take on the dungeon whilst you stay near the merchant (Who sells potions of perception, master thievery and I think oil of speed as well).

This is what thievery is all about, sneaking past the enemy rather than fighting.

If you must take on those guards, dispell magic helps as you dispell their swords..

I agree. You have to think more. If you ever get to the stage that either of them becomes too easy, SCS is the mod to go for. The bad guys use a bit more intelligence when fighting you. (They work together)
