dealing with charm/imprisonment/instant death

I'm playing through this game for the first time. Apparently, the way to deal with imprisonment is a 9th level spell. I have at most 7th level spells. I'm in Watcher's Keep trying to kill the Demon Wraith, and keep getting instantly killed, sometimes before I even get a hit in. OR, maybe I kill him but everyone's running around like chicken with their heads cut off-and die from the traps. My thief isn't good enough to detect the traps-I thought 100 would detect anything.

So, I gave up and I'm cheating. I gave myself saving throws of 1 for spells, wands, death magic. If I understand correctly a 1 is a critical failure, so that should be good. But, they are still running around like idiots.

Even without the difficulty caused by all this, the lack of control of my characters is REALLY irritating.

Anyway, HOW do you make yourself immune to this stuff? By hacking the save games, I mean.

Berserker rage makes the character immune to everything you mentioned. Honestly, you are doing Watcher's Keep a little too early for someone who is playing for the first time. Some of the toughest enemies in the whole series are in WK. I'd skip it until Chapter 6.

Anyway, protection from magic scrolls also makes the character immune to anything magical (of course). Spell Immunity: Abjuration should make your mages immune to Imprisonment and Maze. SI: Enchantment/Charm does the same for domination/charm and chaos/confusion spells. Use Remove Fear or Resist Fear to protect against, well, fear. You should already have the priest spell Negative Plane Protection (and everything else I've mentioned) at your level, enough to have multiple slots dedicated to it for the Demon Wraith battle in particular. As for the traps, 100 is enough to detect anything but it takes a few precious seconds. The cleric spell Find Traps might be a better option for this battle. Have everyone use ranged attacks/spells until the first layer of traps are disarmed at least.

It generally doesn't hurt to read all spell descriptions.

Imprisonment is a bit of a problem, true - Spell Immunity cannot be cast on others, only on the casting character. Although I don't recall the Wraith usind Imprisonment. Protection from magic scrolls protect from all spells, so they're not all that great if you need other buffs. In a pinch, Bhaalspawn Special ;) should help.
As for fear, confusion or charm, those are really not a problem, there's loads of protection from them. I'll add the priest spell Chaotic Commands to what rancid sushi already mentioned, it's a very good spell that lasts for quite some time.

All in all, just take a good look at what your party can do.

Hi there, Speaking of death prediction, I find it really odd that one of the on-line death prediction services showed me the same death date that I was foretold in my dream about a year ago. FIND OUT YOUR DEATH DATE - I can’t explain this coincidence in any other way except that there must be some kind of magic involved here.

Chapter 6? No wonder. I'm only in Chapter 2, now.

It's worthwhile doing the top one or two floors at that stage. Some nice items that save hassle such as the infinite number of arrows and bolts, so what you've done is fine! :)

I tend to wait with that stuff until end of chapter 6, if you go there in 2 you risk ending up far too powerful for the Underdark, Pirate Isle and Sahuagin (I still wonder how you pronounce that  ).
It should be doable near the end of chapter 2 if you did ALL of the extra quests and areas before.

This is what I tend to do as well. I usually leave the keep for after the underdark. At that point with my group of 3-4 its usually a cake walk to the finish anyways. I usually do it before going after Irenicus because I haet taking the time out from my very linear run through TOB.

I also do not remember the demon wraith using imprisonment. I know that caotic commands does not protect against it nor do all the regular buffs. Best defense is to not allow it to be cast. I've always tried to take out spell caster first.

You could use Protection from magic
