The information I'm seeking is a bit obscure.
I'm playing Pool of Radiance (Amiga/1988) on WinUAE and I have two fighters in the party, one male dwarf and one female elf, and they both have the same amount of exp, little over 35 000. Since according to the ref card this is enough for lvl 6, I went to train them, but to my suprise, only the dwarf was able to train, with the the elf I just got "not enough xp".
Is this a bug or a feature? Does the xp limit for female ef fighters suddenly go up after 5th level? Previously I was able to train them at the same time, so it seems that the exp limits were identical in earlier levels.
Thanks in advance if anybody can ansver my question.

It's been a very long time since I played this, in fact it was on an Amiga, that's how long ago it was.

If the game is sticking to 1st edition rules, which I think it does, then the maximum level fighter an elf can get to is 6; dwarves if I recall correctly can get to level 9, but no higher. The only things I can remember that allow these caps to be surpassed are a Manual of Puissant Skill at Arms (I think that's what it's called) or an object, such as one of the Ioun Stones, that grant an extra level.

The "not enough xp" message is probably just a default message it's using because it doesn't have the correct message in the data base.

We have a [url="http://www.gamebanshee.com/poolofradiance/"]Pool of Radiance subsite[/url] here. It lists 7 as the maximum fighter level for elves, so I'm not sure why you're stuck at level 5. Maybe there's a difference between the PC version of the game (which is what the subsite is based on) and the Amiga version.

Max level for an elf depends on strength as I recall. IIRC, an elf had to have greater than normal max elf strenght (18/75?) to get to 7th level.

It's in the manual and the same with all gold box games in the forgotten realms. Elves with less than 17 str can only have 5 fighter levels, 6 with 17 and 7 fighter levels with 18 strength.
Dwarves with the same strength can have 2 fighter levels more.

Aww...Pool of Radiance (PoR) ...ohh the classic

You should try playing the PoR module for Neverwinter Nights 1 also. It is a re-make of PoR.
