Accessing Blackreach without doing the mainquest?

Does anybody know if it's possible to access Blackreach without doing the mainquest? I know I need the attunement sphere (or whatever it's called), but can I obtain it from Septimus Signus without following the mainquest? I really want to get access to Blackreach so I can harvest soulgems.

According to the wiki, "Players normally first encounter this massive location as part of the Elder Knowledge quest, although it is possible to discover it beforehand. ". Although there are several entrances and exits when you are on the quest and start clearing out areas, if you aren't on the quest yet, there is only one access point:
the Tower of Mzark
