I'm having trouble with this dude. He casts flamestrike on my main PC at the very onset of the encounter and kills him everytime. I have tried protection from fire, equipped with boots of speed and other buffs. I have even left him on a different level but he still gets hit with the flame strike.
Any suggestions?

Which encounter ?
If you're referring to the coronation cerenomy in chapter 7 it's the game's way to tell you that you're screwed if you can't prove that he is the evil guy.

I'm assuming your in the Duchal Palace....
What happened was this: For Sarevok to become a Grand Duke he was to have this ceremony. Little known to the other dukes was that Sarevok hired 2 assassins (along with a bunch of doppelgangers) to kill the remaining 2 grand dukes. To be their you must have already killed the assassins, so well done. Now, after a bunch of dialog, the doppelgangers will show themselves & attack the dukes... IF you should fail in protecting the grand dukes from the doppelgangers, or don't have his diary the game auto kills you, which is what you have described...
So, if you just didn't have the diary, run over to the Iron Throne headquarters & loot the place. If you look thoroughly you'll find it...
If you let the dukes die, then on to tactics...
I recommend buying several Wands of Sleep from 'ol Halbazzer Drin. These can be used by any character & are great for knocking out the doppelgangers. Make sure to not harm the dukes or the Flaming Fist in battle, or you'll be in some serious trouble. (so no Fireballs

)
Beyond that, haste your party & get ready for a small fight with Sarevok once the doppelgangers are dead.

I have the diary and I managed to kill the dopplegangers. I guess I didn't save the dukes however.
What do you mean by tactics?
I do not have a party member with the haste spell either.

Presumably you do have a mage and/or a bard. If so load a save before entering the Duchal palace and go shopping. There are several places to buy spell scrolls, Sorcerous Sundries (I think that's it's name) in the are where the entrance gate to BG is; there's also the mage in the castle directly west of Beregost and, if you have Tales of the Sword coast, Ugoth's Beard.
Also wands of monster summoning are handy in this game. Before you actually enter the room where the meeting is, stand close to the doorway and summon as many monsters within the room as you can before entering.

This. You should reload an earlier save and get Sarevok's journal from the top floor of Iron Throne building before going to the Ducal Palace.
