Kingdoms of Amalur - mechanics questions

  • "+ X % melee damage", does this include damage from Staffs, as those are a melee weapon? Or do they get bonuses from "+% elemental damage"? Does "+ % melee bonus damage" also include the piercing part of melee weapons?
  • Do the "+ 1 abilities" items and Fate Twist cards stack with each other? Do they allow you to go over the max for an ability, i.e. 7/6 Longsword Mastery? Do they count for fulfilling Destiny requirements?
  • What happens to skillpoints gained via training/books when you respec?
Thanks in advance!

I don't know on the staff question. I would imagine so as it is a melee weapon, but that is just my brain telling me it is logical. I remember reading that items that increase ranged damage work with the scepter so bonuses to melee stacking with the staff makes sense to me.

I read that you can go over the maximum rank for abilities by using items that boost abilities, but I haven't tried it myself.

You keep the skill boosts from books and training upon respec. Your character also retains the base skills for his or her race. You may want to wait to read books until after a respec however. The reason is that when you go to level up after a respec you will end up spending all of your skill points. So there will come a point where if you want to use all of the trainers you will respec to train with all of the basic trainers you didn't get to train with while leveling. The next tier of trainers requires a minimum skill of four to train with. You will likely not be able to use most of those depending on what level you were for the respec. You can use books to reach four in some skills in order to use the advanced trainers tied to that skill before spending you level back up.

It's not important really, but if you are trying to squeeze every possible skill point out of the game then this seems to be the way to do it. It's pretty easy to get by with just the free points to lockpicking and stealth depends more on playstyle and even then can't always be depended on. Most characters do just fine without maxing out all skills. You would have to spread your abilities out between all three trees to unlock the fate card that adds +3 to all skills in order to max out all the skills anyway.

Thanks for the clarification. A very good hint about the low level trainers and respeccing. I'll take it to heart.
