Bruma Oblivion Gate Glitch

Wow, this forum isn't as active as it used to be . . . but here is my question. Hope somebody is here to answer it! OK:

My wife is playing through and is on the Bruma Oblivion gate.
Right after she and the Bruma guards went through, they were fighting a bunch of Daedra and she accidentally killed a guard. Immediately one of the other guards arrested her, and she submitted and was transported back to Castle Bruma. Capt. Burd and the others were waiting for her at the city gate and they went back into the Oblivion Gate. Here's the problem: the guards won't follow her into the tower now. They won't even follow from the gate itself! She clicks the "Follow Me" dialog option, but they stay put. She's cleared the entire tower and gotten to the Sigil Chamber, but she can't snatch the stone without Burd standing there, and he won't leave the Oblivion gate area. Is there any fix for this at all?

If she's laying on a PC you can try using the console command

player.PlaceAtMe Burd, 1, 256, 1

whilst standing if front of the sigil Stone.

If on a console however she'll almost certainly have to revert to a save prior to entering the gate the first time.

For future reference, the best way to tackle this quest is to enter the gate without talking to Burd at all, so that you are on your own. Clear the tower of all monsters, click on the sigil stone; you'll get the message that you have to have Burd with you. Don't fret, wend your way back toward the exit and Burd and his two guards should meet you well before you reach it. Then simply complete the quest as normal.

The problem here, and the reason for doing it the above way, is the terrible AI the game (like Morrowind before it) uses for NPC followers. Third party modders found ways to implement Ais for followers, but Bethesda couldn't be arsed!

Thanks a lot!

We're on the PC, so console command will do it!
My wife is still hooked on Oblivion, while I am having great fun exploring the world of SKYRIM - especially with all the lovely mods available at the STEAM workshop!
