Although it frequently occurs in spell descriptions (calculations) I can't seem to find what SP means eactly and how it is influenced. It's mentioned in the manual as 'Remainig Spell Point (after test)', but no further explanation od how this is calculated/ Other sources talk about as if it was a (derived) statistic, again without detail.

What is SP
How do I influence it.

Sp is the spell itself, SP is Spell Prowess which is a measure of how well the character uses the spell, and SP* is the remainder you mentioned. You raise your Spell Prowess by spending experience on the spell itself. SP* is excess spell prowess after performing the test to cast the spell so essentially how much you succeed the test by.

It has been a while since I have played and I generally played melee characters so I could be wrong. I seem to remember it working that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out I was wrong on this.

There's a thread here by me, where I got referred to the official Drakensang fora. VERY good advice there. It made me understand the system on a practical level.
