High-level abilities - bad system?

Hello all,
I'd like to know your opinion on the high-level abilities, esp. the ones that have an "improved" version: Evasion/Greater Evasion, Whirlwind/Greater Whirlwind and Deathblow/Greater Deathblow.
Wouldn't it be more realistic if you would always have more of the basic abilities than the greater ones? Like having Greater Whirlwinds equal to half the amount of Whirlwinds.
Sure, it would make fighters less fantastic, but it would also, IMO, increase the RP value.
What do you think?

Yeah it is a bit strange. But why can't you have more than one smite? Am I missing something here? My archer needs it.

I think it would have made sense that if for every Greater Whirlwind Attack you took, you first had to take a "normal" Whirlwind Attack.

I don't quite agree on that part, Xyx.
I fell it is like saying to an runner that he can't run the marathon at 2:40 (h:m) all the time, but has to run it at 3:00 half on the time.
No way, you know how to use a greater whirlwind, so why settle with a standard one?
It would have hade more sence, if you had to have at least 3 regular whirlwinds to be able to get greater WW. (or something the like)
I see that as more evolutionary correct than just saying to a 30th level fighter, "sorry buddy, you can't get another GWW you need yet another regular WW first".
"But I already have 4 GWW - I believe I know how to do it"

Don't you think that the high-level abilities system in ToB is similar to the skills in diablo 2? You see, you get 1 point for every level you gain and you can freely choose any skills you want (would that be low or high-level: every skill level needs only 1 point to gain one level). Also you need to learn low-level skills in order to get high-level skills (sounds similar to normal and greater variants of ToB abilities) I recon the high-ability system in ToB intended to give your character more 'personality,' since mage or cleric with TACH0 of zero would be essentially same as just normal fighters. It's just my thought
Well, I agree with MegaToerist on that we'll need 2 points for 'greater' variants... but we'll get fewer abilities if we do that because ToB isn't diablo II and your PCs won't be level ninety or something.

I think the high-level abilities are ok, since a level 40 fighter would have a base Thaco of -19 or something... with a Kensai -32 or something... Then armor would become useless. Way to easy!
