Naked mage.

You read right, nekkid mage

I am currently soloing a mage that is so poor he cannot even afford a fresh pair of socks. That means no robe of vecna, no amulet of power, no boots of speed, no staff of the magi, no nothing! Well except for a normal quarterstaff

The game becomes much more fun without the use of these uber items! You have to rely much more on your spells!
I am finishing up chapter 2, and the only problem I foresee is when Irenicus steals my soul. I'll have to use the ioun stone of regeneration in order to heal myself
Give it a go! Nudity is great fun!

maybe you should add five NPC's and have a naked party.

THat would be useless for an fighter but if you got an say monk, mages, and druid then you probably could do it but you WILL NEED protection spells like stoneskin, ironskin etc plus you will NEED a monk to be able to melee critters or just relay 100% on spells which isn't that simple

*Item Spoilers*
I found that having a regen item in my solo games was essentail as I've never solo'd through with any type of cleric. For some reason in my game the regn ioun stone doesn't work properly and doesn't heal me all the way when I rest or leave an area and give it several hours to work. It is however useful to help yourself to Ribald's (sp?) ring of regen in the adventurer's mart. This is extemely useful at the start of a solo game. If I'm not any type of thief then I go for some kind of mage and use my familiar to steal the ring. Besides it's not that hard to take down Gaxx now with all the cheese and tactics that have been posted on the boards. Just remember to use stoneskin and melf's meteor's are counted as +5 weapons.

Way to go ajpc! I was about to start soloing a Transmuter (No Breach etc.) but a Nekkid Transmuter! That is a challenge. Take my toothpick of *oh damn your immune to it* fiend, fear me! Are scrolls O.K? - Curdis

I don't know what the big deal is, I always play naked.
Oh - you guys mean the character?!?!?!

I have played through with a solo sorcerer without items (in my last games I even gave up the single quarterstaff).
HP loss is a problem, especially for the sorcerer (spell selection): in the early phases I have used Larloch's Minor Drain + some innate abilites, later Limited Wish: Heal and in ToB Summon Planetar: Heal.
A regular mage could also use Vampiric Touch and/or Tenser's Transformation.

Hmmm, mages need to collect some scrolls to write them into the spellbook. My sorceress don't needed scrolls, so I she left most of the loot and chests untouched.

@Kovi,
Filling spell books with scrolls has to be O.K. (I guess) and selling them (as loot) too. I was refering to the use a scroll in the quick item slot (the implications with project image etc..).
Now maybe the full Nekkid Ham string challenge would be:
mage no nothing in equipment - nekkid -
spells as selected upon creation
Choose your kit! I reckon Transmuter is probably the most limited but a specialist alterer can't cast stoneskin
Now if we aint buying equipment perhaps the goal should be cash held at completion? Should be a shirt load - Curdis

how about conjuector, you lose out on the kickass truesight but if you got a clerc or an palidan then that's probably no problem and you can get all the good spells, just an idea, but if youre soloing then...

The hardest to solo is probably an abjurer (no stoneskin!); I'll have to try one some day

I agree that abjuration is probably the most important school (Protection From Magical Weapons, Spell defense, Spell strike, Imprisonment). Illusion is the close second e(Mirror Image, Invisibility, Improved Invisibility, Mislead, Project Image, Simulacrum).
It might not be possible to play through with a Necromancer or a Transmuter (without serious cheese).
Evocation (Sunfire, Mordenkainen's Sword, Chain Contingency), Alteration (Stoneskin, Timestop), Necromancy (Skull Trap, Animate Dead, Death Spell, Abi Dalzim) are also important.
