There's this weird bug when I'm playing - whenever my mage summons an elemental, he gets stunned and the elemental is neutral, blue circle, for a while. What the hell? It's not like this with monster summoning, just elementals. What do I do? I tried installing the patch, but it said I didn't need it because I had Throne of Bhaal installed.

That's the way elemental summoning works. If you read the spell description again you'll see that it specifically states that there's a mental battle between the mage and the elemental right after the summoning and that there's a chance that it will turn hostile, depending on the mental battle's outcome.

Note that this is only true for the mage version of the spell. The elemental summoning spells cast by druids work straight out of the box, so to speak.
