Isn't it unfair.

That you get your first abilities at 3 million xp? It should have been at a given level, say 20. As it is now a thief or a bard will get their first at level 24 and a ranger or paladin at level 18. That isn't fair at all. They get six more abilities because of that.
Also why can't a mage keep choosing extra spells?
What do you think?

No I meant the extra 6 level spell and such. I mean fighters can pick as many whirlwinds as they like.

yeah totally unfair is my fighters getting new abilities every level and viconia and edwin not getting any extra spells or stuff after exhausting their selection .

You must consider that thieves reach level
40, mages only 31, so, after all...
Mages are incredibly powerful, they don't need more extra spells, IMO.

Heh, fighters are also incredibly powerful. Paladins can get loads of Greater Whirlwind Attacks and Summon Devas, but Clerics just stop gaining abilities after only a few levels. They don't even get extra spells!

Actually, all your professions are too powerful! Those poor little mephits never gain anything as they advance!

The reason is thay in the game the powers of a mage and a cleric are limited by the weakness of their own body. Spellcasting at that level is a major effort and the lack of high level spells reflects this. Should mages/clerics gain more and more level 9 spells then they would be too powerful in the game.

Read The Cleric Quintet, it gives a good indication of the limits of clerical power even for a very powerful priest such as Cadderly.

I would have been happy with my mage getting an extra 1st 2nd & 3rd lvl spells so they could fill up their lower lvl spells like a cleric.

As an aside... it would have been nice had they included the optional PnP 2ndED magic resistance rules. TOB favors fighter classes way too much.

The rule was that 10th lvl was normal and every lvl past 10th reduced magic resistance by 5% for you targets. So a 13th lvl wizard casting magic missle at a great wyrm red dragon with 95% magic resistance(MR) would have a 80% chance of not getting through the MR. It also worked in reverse. So a 1st lvl wizard casting colorspray at a an archmagi wearing the almost unique robes of the same name (5%) would have a 50% chance that the MR would take effect.

Would that Archmagi be lvl 20 then?

Dunno about mages but sorcerers are already so cheesy. If they got even more spells they would only become even more overpowered.
