To pick up on my earlier topic, here's another question.
If you were to go through SoA and ToB with a party of 4 characters (1 protagonist and 3 npcs) what would your protagonist be and what npcs would you take?

Well, for a powerful party, use the evil characters...
Korgan
Viconia
Edwin
PC- Fighter dualed to a thief
For a good party...
Keldorn
Imoen/replaces yoshimo
Anomen OR Aerie
PC- warrior

I just did this on my 2nd run through.
Jan
Viconia
Korgain
Me - Wild Mage
Though I really liked Jan in SoA I found him to sit more and more on the sidelines on ToB. I don't regret taking him, as I love his personality... mostly. But if done again, I'd swap in Sevorak.
Either, way I recommend trying out a wild mage. They're a blast, especially in SoA when you attempt (at a 40-50% clip) spells above and beyond your current level.

I would take Haer'dalis, Cernd, Viconia and play halfling swashbuckler as pc.

Me- class irrelevant, but must be male...
Viconia.
Jaheira.
Aerie.

I think a more ideal team would be:
Jan (Thief)
Viconia (Cleric, and in ToB a pretty decent fighter)
Edwin (Mage)
That leaves ur main character to be anyone you want.
The thing is, a party need not necessary have to have a fighter, although it helps in Melee situations. But I'm sure Edwin and Viconia can summon enough minions to solve that problem.
P.S. Is it just me, or are there a couple of us from Perth (Australia) in this forum???

I've got two games on the go at the moment - yet another no-reloads solo attempt, and a 4 character party that is just about to leave for Spellhold. It's working out real well. I have:
PC (blade)
Keldorn
Jaheira
Jan
I'd have Anomen instead of Jaheira, but he's an irritating ass, and I wanted to see what the Jaheira romance would be like.

I went thru soa and tob
with
Edwin
Korgan
Viconia
my PC (human assasin with insane backstab damage)
had a lot of fun with that party. well i did take sarevok with me out of sheer curiosity,
but without him my chars would have become even more overpowered

My favorite party was/is:
Korgan
Viconia
Imoen (for roleplay, and the bare necessities in thieving skills)
Kasei (human kensai/mage, dualled at 9th kensai).
Worked really well most of the game, had trouble with ToB until i discovered useful combat spell trigger for the Kensai/mage: Prot. Magical Wpns/Imp.Haste/Tensor's T. This trigger isn't as nice as an offensive one, but it got the party through some tough spots.
I notice most of the 4-somes posted above include Viconia. Can't beat that MagicResistance, can ya?
Am tempted to try again without Korgan, just use the Kensai/mage to fight. Would definitely have to dual-class later, say 13th level, and even then I wonder if he would ever get spells off or if he'd be stuck in melee all the time.

At the moment I'm going trough SoA with
Half Orc Cleric/Thief
Korgan
Edwin
... and will probably take Sarevok into the party when it comes to ToB.
Since my character just gained the "Use all items" skill he is able to wield Carsomyr and get it's magic resistance, because the thief's skill overrides the cleric's weapon restrictions.

@Aegnor: Why don't you try a fighter/mage dual if your kensai/mage is doing all the melee fighting anyway?
They are far more powerful and it seems just a little strange to me to use a mage as a fighter - who not just take a plain fighter or the suggested fighter/mage?

The four character's that I'm using right now are Korgan, Edwin, Sarevok, and Loth (pc sorcerer).
I'm thinking about dropping my brother however. I went through SOA with just Korgan, Edwin, and me, and I often get the feeling that Sarevok isn't really making a difference. The main reason that I'm using him now is just so someone can weild the silver sword. I love watching those souls fly heavenward in the thick of battle.

That's exactly why I probably won't bother. That 4-some I mentioned, Korgan, Vic, Imoen, and Kensai/mage would probably still work well without Imoen. But there's too many cool items out there for three characters to use efficiently.
As far as a fighter/mage...exactly what are the advantages? Weapon specializations? Kensai bonuses seem to balance this. Wearing bracers would be nice, I suppose. I never missed having ranged weapons, there's always MMM and later, energy blades. Prefer melee anyway.
Anyway, its not going to happen, because next project is to install TDD, and try something completely new. Maybe a druid, maybe a fighter-less party (just to say i did it).

you must be out of your mind for even thinking of dropping Sarevok. He is a one man tank Battalion. His Deathbringer/doombringer(not quite sure what its called) which he uses in almost every fight does some out of this world damage. I once saw it do 106 damage. Drop Korgan if you want. He is good I know but Sarevok is really better.

I played through soa+tob with this home made party (multiplayer):
Pc: Inquisitor, specializing in twohanded weapons. Mainly used carsomyr and the vorpal sword and halberds.
Half orc fighter thief. Specialized in long swords, scimitars, katana. Dual wielding. He served as a backup fighter (natural 19 str) and of course was in charge of thievery. He always took lots of damage once TOB got going, i should probably have treated him more like a fighter and just put platemail and a shield on him.
Ranger dualed to cleric. Dual wielding war hammer/flail/maces. Usually crom fayr, runehammer & mace of disruption + shields as needed.
Sorcerer: Bringing down enemy defenses, doing massive area damage at times and supplying strong summons like planetars and elementals.
Generally it worked quite nicely, i only really had problems with draconis/abazigal and melissan. I did not kill demogorgon however so i dont know how i'd do against him.
Next is playing through it all with a sorcerer, I find soloing a spellcaster a fun change from this melee heavy party.

Me-F/T/M that i maxed solo'n through SOA. She could easily go it alone but more folks is fun and have'n the equipment spread out makes it a little more challenging. My expert in scouting and backstab'n caster removal. Dual wields most of the time but will use upgraded holy sword or that +4 thac0 reduce'n sword when i use GW.
Sarevok-With silver sword most of the time. That man just dominates with Deathbringer assault and the vorpal effect.
Edwin- If ya like cast'n alot of high level spells this is the MAIN MAN.
Jahera-She blows, but makes the game interesting cause most fights i have to do a pretty little dance just to keep her alive.. Otherwise she just distracts the invis seeing undead that get by the curtain of death me and Sarevok lay down and that attacks Edwin. Tis kinda sad that such a high level druid is reduced to caster protect'n fodder, but hey with her spells, crappy thac0 and even crappier atk rate what else is she good for?
And no, I don't need any clerics. Evil turn undead is annoy'n and the good clerics blow.

One group that wasn't mentioned is... the Neutral Aligned Group (TM).
Jan - does thievery and magic
Jaheira - does fighting and druid stuff
+
PC - Anything you fancy, myself I play a monk, but you could have anything.

DaJir-
What are you talking about with Jaheira? She is the BEST tank and probably the best Character in the game.
Why?
1. Ironkins - Makes her pretty much invunerable to melee damage. I play at insane difficulty, I find that Ironskins/Stoneskins makes a character 5X better, simply because a single hit can do so much damage.
2. Summons - Druids get THE best summons in the game- Elemental Princes. Fire Elementals and Nymphs are really good as well. Fire Elementals ake out Beholders very nicely... (If you don't want to use the Shield of Balduran.)
3. Natures Beauty, insect swarm, creeping doom. If you have never used these spels I suggest trying them, you will be in for a pleasant suprise.
4. Give her two stars in staffs, and then start adding to 2-handed skill. There are some NICE staves in the game... especially druid oriented ones (staff of the woodlands). Staff of Ram is simply the most damageing weapon in the game, and is blunt, so NOBODY is immune. Plus shes multi class and will get a crap-load of Greater Whirlwinds. (Which make attack rate totally irrelevant.)
5. Her high dex and no armor restrictions means she can get a decently low AC even without Gaxx (which I give to my main character.
6. Two-handed weapon have a long range, she can stand behind another tank and do incredible damage, while not taking a hit.
7. Quest is great fo expeience and items!
Now, my main charcter is an illusionist/ fighter who is stoneskined and in difficult fight mirror imaged. He RARELY gets hit.
My four person party is:
Me Illusionist/thief
Jaheira
Aerie - Romance
Yoshi/Imoen - Role-playing
If I were power gaming, I would switch out Aerie for Jan (did you know firetooth can fire Flashers? Mmmmmm.... Traps) and Imoen for Haer'Dalis or Cernd (yes Cernd, stoneskin, armor of faith, super transformaion, sit back and watch the pain.)
I find my character is more than enough of a spellcaster, (especially at the igh levels you wil get to in a four-man team.) Timestop dual wield crom and FOA, or corm and Foebane, nuff said.)
In an insane difficulty game Stoneskin is just that good.
