Gandalf would win, assuming Elminster didn't flee via esoteric means.
Gandalf is a demigod, though...come to think of it it would be like comparing an apple to a pomegranate - both are round, red, and fruits...but they are still VERY different.
The magic of Middle Earth is nothing like any flavor of D&D magic.
I don't know that there is a way to determine a winner with any degree of accuracy.
Just my $0.02.

Hmmm, depends where. If they're on Faerun, I give it to Elminster....granted Gandalf is a demigod, but Elminster's got a whole lot of power behind him...and considering that he's got Mystra/Midnight to help him (and therefore Kelemvor), not to mention all of Mystra's other chosen, I think he would have a good shot at winning.
However, if they're dueling anywhere but Faerun, say, Sigil or Middle Earth, then definitely to Gandalf, as Elminster loses whatever outside help he could gain.

Mystra wouldn't allow any of her chosen -especially not Elminster to die.
I'm sure he has more spells in his spellbook, and would probably whoop Gandalf's ass with a Time Stop + Improved Alacratiy + Dragon's Breath(3) easy >
Not that either of them are That strong.
A better question would be who would win between Belgarath the Sorceror and say..Vecna?
heh.

yeah...Raistlin's good....but he isn't a demigod- nor has he the favor of any diety. I don't think he'd get any outside help from anybody. Elminster and Gandalf are both good aligned, Raistlin is..well,.....evil incarnate. Way too much ambition for his own good. Elminster and Gandalf both strike me as being better anyway.

He may not be favour of any god but dun forget he manage to defeat 2 gods(read 'Twins' Trilogy) while Gandalf is only a demi-god and old Elm well I really dun know what to make of him. At times his damn pwoerful and at times .......

First I think this topic should have been is SYM.
I think Raistlin is out of this one cause he is evil and selfish- a total opposite of Elminster and Gandalf.
Elminster was created as the alter ego of the creater of DnD. He is level one in every class except for mage, in which he is a high level.(I forgot which level exactly.)
I like Gandalf more, though I think Elmister would win. Because although Gandalf didn't realy die when he faced the demon in the mines, he was defeated then. A high level mage in DnD could kill a demon if he went about it correctly.

Well, if you ask me, Raistlin couldn't beat either of the two. He was powerful, but come on, Gandalf and Elminster. And Gandalf would beat Elminster, hands down. That is, MHO, of course. By the way, a demon and a balrog can't really be compared to each other. Besides, balrogs are originally same kind of spirits as Gandalf. In other words, maiar, second only to valar, who are basically the deitys of middle-earth.

Elminster is just Gandalf's clone in the Realms.
Gandalf could defeat him any time.End of argument.
Raistlin! That's interesting. On Krynn I think that Raist would easily dispatch Elminster!
How about Mordenkainen???
And also what does this topic has to do with TOB?(mind you I really like it)

*sighs*
GANDALF IS NOT POWERFUL IN D&D TERMS.
Magic is very different in middle-earth then any D&D world.
The two are incomparible.

Many, many...
many times.
This topic is redundant, misplaced, and, most importantly, fairly inane. You might as well ask for a preference between green beans and peaches; we're talking vegetables and fruits, here. There is absolutely
no solid ground upon which to compare these two wizards. At least green beans and peaches aren't fictitious, at any rate.
