This fight is about impossible. My party:
Daheel - Bard 1 Barbarian [13edit12] Fighter1
Amraith - Enchanter 4 Fighter 10
Harbesh - Rogue 10 Fighter 4
Makados - Cleric of Talos 14
Mirai - Mage 14
Fissera - Druid 14
They are non- min/maxed and are in fact the default party, hands of fury..
I start the battle buffed up to holy hell. I have 5 undead and 1 Bear on the table which I thought would give me an advantage. Soon they have undead also. A dwarf fighter makes a bead for Makados who is the healer and dead raiser. Fissera casts creaping doom near the dwarf and all fighters attack the dwarf. Amraith[edit Mirai' casts chaos. Mirai casts flame arrow. Harbesh gets behind the dwarf to try and turn him to attack. A ranged enemy (rogue?) has now wrecked Harbesh's HP.
Is this the hardest fight in the game?
I don't need the sword but it is just frustrated to be destroyed. Also is there any way to return the merchant to the area. I wanted the Massive Halberd of Hate, but now that I might have the gold the merchant is gone. I can't remember if I completed this fight my original party.
----------------
Edit: I figured out to lower the difficulty setting and remember the immunities of the enemies which I looked up. That helped immense for example we rapidly 'chunked' the mage and I kept the rogue (missile) busy with a couple of zombie lords. I still didn't realize
that you cannot hurt the evil dwarf very much with anything other than magic so it took ages to bring him down. I took some invisibility spells with the mage to unlock the dwarfs AI if he went for a caster. Also I turned their bone guards and then cast dismissal on them.
Still I needed about 6 reloads even with that set up.

The 6 ghost battle is rather difficult sort of -- explanation following: if you are unprepared then you are dead as there is no fleeing the grave yard even if you want to; if you are partially prepared (summoned allies and some buffs) then you have a chance to exorcise these nasty ghosts; if you planned and prepared (reading all the info you can get and paying attention to all of it) then the battle is tough - planning is all about who to battle first and how to occupy all the other ghosts while you are doing it (it is not really about spells and weapons) and as such this battle can be hard if you just charge in but if you plan it is so much easier. Of all the battles in IWD2 this ranks as tied in second as the hardest battle in the game if you partially planned (most difficult if you have not planned at all).
What is the hardest battle? Isair and Medae?

So did you defeat the 6 ghosts and get a holy avenger souvenir (since you can't use it) - cool sword to hang over the mantle if you can get it. Remember it is all about strategy this battle and not about what you can cast or what weapons you have in order to exorcise them.
As for the most difficult battle in the game that's a matter of perspective and how you play. The battle with I and M is mostly certainly not like battling Belfheit (in IWD1) but for the game at least it is probably the most difficult of battles requiring a lot of strategy and micro-management rather than just smashing them. For me many battles stand out as very difficult (meaning it took level 7 healing spells or retreating to some degree to survive): the 6 ghosts if you are unprepared or even partially prepared then the 6 ghosts are the most difficult in the game [because it requires strategy and info in order to win]; it ties with the black dragon of Chult as one dangerous battle [if you are only allowed the spells you have already memorized rather than preparing for the battle then it is one very difficult battle]; the elf Lich was very dangerous to us as it cast some pretty powerful spells; three sections in the Severed Hand in which 3 separate battles were fought were very dangerous; and the 4 iron golems guarding the monk tomb is deadly (never could defeat all 4 of them - so it probably ranks as number 1.5 just below I and M).
What for your team was the most difficult battles?

I set the difficulty down for Isair and Medea just because I was getting tired of IWD2 and just wanted closure. I got lucky in that my cleric was getting beat on held and in the last seconds of his life he unfroze and got a heal spell in. Then he cast holy aura. My mage cast horrid wilting fringing them and their summons. The tanks chunked the summoner liasion dude. Then the cleric (of talos) and mirai the mage and Fissera the druid cast lighting spells over and over again. I had my mirror imaged (enchanter 4) mage guy front isair and the other two tanks beat down I and Ms summons. Then they retreated. Oh the mage read an executioners eyes scroll about the time of the holy aura.
I would have probably had to reload several times if I didn't take the difficulty down. There were some potions and ammo that I never bothered using.
