Babcock and Throg

I'm doing this quest, but I only get the options of luring Throg outside to get killed, or to attack the guards alongside the orcs.

According to the walkthrough (and my memory), you can convince the orc leader to work with Mr Babcock. However, the latter only explains that there is nothing that can be done.

Any help, please? Thanks!

I don't recall how to get Throg to work with Babcock, a very hazy memory is telling me the key might be the first conversation with Babcock, but it's been a very long time since I did it that way.

Usually if I'm playing a good or neutral character I've become so anti Tarant because of the Ren'ar Siamese twins quest that I either avoid the quest (good) or side with Throg (neutral) which results in the Orcs wiping out Tarant.

If I'm playing an evil character I eliminate Throg.

Damn, I've saved after talking to Babcock. "First talks determine" quests are stupid.

I could be wrong, as I said it's been a long time, and I mean like 7+ years since I did the quest in that way. In fact I'm not even sure there is a fourth option, every WT I've checked say you either kill Throg; lure him out so Wheeler can kill him or persuade Throg to escape.

To succeed in persuading Throg you have to have expert persuasion, but I assume you already know that.

No, I didn't know about the expert persuasion. A sore oversight on our resident walkthrough!

If you attack the guards with them, does entire Tarant turn on you?

If you side with the Orcs and the Orcs win it's a mute question in my experience, the Orcs wipe out the city. I'd be interested to know if my experience in that department was a glitch though.

Just wondering, since the walkthrough here states that they only attack the guards.

The reason for my curiosity is that when I've done it I've exploited game mechanics. I pick-pocketed everyone outside, not to steal but to put cursed items on them, then waited for them to die before entering the factory and starting the revolution. It could be that by doing it that way I corrupted the Orcs AI, and finding no guards to fight they attacked everyone they could find.

On the other hand walthroughs are not this site's strong suit. I just read this on a walkthrough
Alternatively, you can offer the join the cause of the half-orcs when you talk to Throgg... but this course of action winds up pitting you against all of Tarant. Hope you like big battles!

Which tallies with my experience. You can find this WT and Steve Carter's WT here

That's what happened to me too.

On the other hand, SWCarter's walkthrough says NOT to mix melee/dodge and magic, which is just about the strongest possible character in Arcanum.

The problem with mixing melee/dodge and magic is it makes the game so easy you finish it in your sleep! :D
