'fighters guild' spoilers

Are the companions the 'fighter guild' in the game? I think I did all of their quests. It seemed to end when their leader was given a burial or whatever.
There isn't a Fighter's Guild in the game, but the Companions are the closest thing to it. Pretty much all of the faction questlines end when you become the faction leader.
