Solo with a Sorc?

Hi everyone!

I've got some questions about soloing, esp w/ a Sorcerer.

I've got the Knock spell to open doors, but all those traps... how do you discover them and how to get past 'em?

I always end up with 2-3 NPC's in my solo games...
just because I need a thief and (maybe) some healer...

You don;t need an healer, when you solo, you will have lot's (and i mean lot's) of healing potions.
And about the thiefing ability's, that why my only solo games where with a combined thief class, or with a fighter class, so i could bash the locks, and just let the traps go off, and hope i make my save! (often you do)

You can avoid some floor traps. Use summons to spring the ones you can't avoid. As for those trapped chests you have to open, use Stoneskin and Minor Spell Turning to protect yourself.

The Cloak of Mirroring will also protect you from trap damage.

Mirror image helps on some traps(especially the poison ones in Irenicus's dungeon), so does stone skin on the physical damage ones. Other you can either use spell deflection or just make your save(which i mostly did with my sorc). With annoy'n maze/imprisonment traps i'd try spell immunity, or just avoid since i've mostly only seen those on boxes and floor traps, never doors. Spell trap from staff of magi might also work too. And try cloak of mirroring.
Don't forget, summoned elementals will eat traps also (but outside of the initial dungeon i haven't really found the need to).

A cheesy way to avoid certain ground traps is just to walk as close as you can get to a wall. Take small steps and you'll be able to just walk past most of em.

If you don't know where all the traps are you could pick an alignment that'll give you a familiar that can. Otherwise just always walk along walls and don't open any chests. If you're a sorc you only need cash to buy prot from undead/magic scrolls, recharge wands, and a few pieces of equip (robe of vecna, belt of inertial barrier, belt of hill giant str, robe of displacement) and that cash you can easily raise by just looting bodies. Only a few chests have quest items in em and they are rarely insta-kill spells if they are trapped at all.

spoilerish
if you get the protection from magic scroll from ribald and vhailors helm (hey, that other post is also around :D ) let the copy of you cast it upon you so you wont waste the scroll (just dont forget to put the scroll in your quickslot..). when you are invulnerable to magic, the traps wont be able to harm you either!!!

Yeah, but if i'm not mistaken, the helmet can't be worn by a sorc. and cause he's soloing this wouldn't do him mutch good !

A sorcerer wouldn't need an item to help them simulacrum, so it doesn't matter. The problem is that illusions can't trigger traps or open doors.

oh yeah, sorry. i think then helmet is only for figthers or something like that. but anyway, for other people who have the problem can check it out now. sorry for getting your hopes up and stuff

Make your alignment chaotic neutral and use your find familiar as your thief? At chaotic neutral your familiar is a cat with decent thieving skills, i think 99% find traps and open locks, and 70% in the rest of the skills (i think). I've never actually tried it through a full game so i'm not sure if it's useful later on...but if you solo and REALLY want a thief... :) The knock spell is really all you need though, you can avoid most traps or just buff up and take the damage.

If you're a bit of a psycho, use greater malison and polymorph other on stuff, then when it turns into a squirrel, get your cat to bash it :)

A word of caution

Those squirrels still have an attack and IIRC it is at the original monster THACO. Don't want kitty to go boom.

@siber, I think your stats are over generous Hide in the Shadows for the cat was around 99% but it couldn't pick pockets very well (and couldn't get any better with potions etc.) and I don't seem to think it was much chop at traps or locks (happy to be contradicted). - Curdis !

the rabbit for true neutral is best at traps, and best of all if your rabbit detonates a fireball trap you can have him for lunch!!!

now for all you solo sorcs, here is a problem...the best combat summons, the only ones worth getting are skellys and sword...and quest summons, of course. but skellies will walk right over most traps and not detonate them. which summons will trigger traps? will fire elementals or is it only monster summon 3 etter caps or wild dogs or wargs? so if you solo you need a crappy summon spell?

inv stalkers/ I've always been curious....

Most traps: use Minor Spell Deflection
Energy Drain and Maze traps: use Spell Turning (which is much more worth getting than Spell Deflection)
Always: use Spell Trap from the Staff of the Magi (which lasts for 8 hours)
