Suggestions Needed

Our previous forum allowed me to give members two different titles (of which I chose Member and Exalted Member), but the new one allows me to essentially have as many as I want.

So... what I'd like to hear from everyone is whether or not you would like to see more titles (based on number of posts) or if I should just keep things the way they are. If you do think I should add more titles, then please give me a few suggestions as to what you'd like to see and what order you'd like to see them in (by # of posts). I'm not sure if I'm going to add any additional ones yet, but if I hear some good suggestions, I just might.

Serious replies only, please. That goes for you too, Weasel =).

Hmmm...if this is a consideration, I preferred the old way of voting for a member in response to value of posts...rather than achieving status as a result of number of posts... just my humble opinion :)

I agree with Ysh

Having a number of titles just based on the number of posts wouldn't help bring out a number of quality posts. I would love though to have that rating based on the kind of posts the individual usually makes (from entertaining to informative). :)

Time to be serious

IMHO I believe it will cause posting just to get a title. I would like to see titles, but not for amount of post. I believe it will lead to more 'one word' post (Which I admit to have done..)

If you're going by post counts I would suggest something like this.
Newbie: 1-50 posts
Member: 50-500 posts
Exalted Member: 500-1000
Spammer: 1000+

Unfortunately, a system like this can encourage new members to post just to get a better title. But then again, if you're having members rate each other than its a big popularity contest. Both have their flaws...

Is there a way that registered members could set their own titles in the same way that we set our own avatars, sigs, location, etc.? This will of course, lead to lots of grandiose nonsense, but it would be kind of fun. Maybe moderators and administrators could be set up to have two titles so they could retain their identified status and engage in the general silliness of the boards at the same time.

I like this idea, and it was similar to what I was thinking, but I think the only way to do that would be too have Buck change each one personally, and I doubt he wants to do that for 4000+ members...

Considering the above suggestions, I would agree that more titles and hierarchy might encourage intensely frivolous posting (that is, a more frivolous than currently seen). Therefore, I would vote to leave the system and ranks as they stand or set the thresholds low.

Thanks for asking us, Buck. We enjoy the opportunity to contribute to your great site however we can. :)

Yes, the forum will allow members to make their own titles, but I have opted to disable this. I'm not so sure that the profanity filter would work on titles and, even if it did, the feature would still amount to a lot of "nonsense" titles, as you put it.

I had a similar idea. Leave the first two things the way they are right now. Then add the following.

Spammer: 5000-9999
Exalted Spammer: 10000-?????

Instead of Exalted Spammer, why not just put "Spawn of Weasel"... :D

Well, I figured it should, at least in some way, encourage people to post rather than discourage. ;)

My feelings are pretty much the same as others though. Different ranks will only encourage spamming... More so... And qualtiy will diminish.

Perhaps a combination method would work. Still have the voting, but at certain # of posts combined with rating, they'd get some new rank. This would, imho, stop people from making dozens of idiot posts because people would vote against them.
At say 3000 posts and a rank of exalted member, let them choose their own title.

Thats what the Cyber soap box does.
Maybe you should talk to Garaelb. He runs that site and has ranking for posters. Nice guy too. Damn good at physics.

That sounds like a nice median, but it might be difficult to institute, as Buck would probably have to all people to change their title manually, while making sure others didn't do it.

Could the board be set where the user could choose from a selection of ranks ( Like Paladin, Monk, Fighter, ect). This would stop "nonsense" titles.

I don't think there need to be such titles at all - I've alsways been quite happy with the system at hand

(althoug my 5-star rating was nice to display :o :D )

i think it should stay the same, or you could come up with a title to the most "famous" people (1 title for each one like Aegis: Fishslaping Monk or something like that) :D

This is what another site does.
They look at the number of posts, the quality of posts and then the mods all decide together if the person deserves a "custom title". This is not of his/her choosing most of the time. And they place it underneath the persons nick. That way only the people who deserve it get it. Quality of posts and post numbers both work so there is a balance of one liners and good posts. At the same time Buck and the mods have all the control.

I remember another board where a person was given the title of Troll because he cross posted a great deal all on the same subject, it annoied everyone quite so much that it was decided by all he was given this title :)

I have no problem, with the current method. Although the above one would be quite useful.
