Why our arch enemy isn't up to much (Spoilers) longish

I toyed with putting this in SYM but it really is a BG2 SoA Thing.

After playing through the game over the last three years it occurred to me that there is (outside of dreams) no dialogue with Jon Irenicus which doesn't involve him screwing up!

No wonder he didn't make it to the sequel!

Examples - taking it from the start
"They act sooner than anticipated" Got it wrong Jon!

"Enough, I don't have the time for this" So what's keeping you pony breath?

"How delightfully mad of you I never thought you'd.." The Uber mage not got his act together AGAIN, I'm shocked.

"No on reflection matron mother your advice was the correct.." Get it right you boof head.

I think Jon should have been flattered that we dragged out sorry hides all over Amn foiling his pathetically moronic 'schemes'. I suggest that he was just a delusional type with real issues concerning his relationship with his father and this was all just tragic attention seeking behaviour.

Who else expects more in an evil villan? - Curdis !

'Irenicus the Unready'
In all fairness, he seems to have spent a lot of time and effort attempting to remove your immortal soul, yet seems absoloutely amazed when you - the demi-god that you are - turn up to get it back or try to foil his evil plans. not to mention his efficient way of dealing with you in the asylum:
Put you in a none too challenging maze
Give you an unlimited amount of time to escape
Act all surprised when you turn into an embodiment of your uber-evil dad and turn all the residents (that he was busy torturing) against him.

oh, and not even attempt to finish you off. ever. until, of course, you are more powerful than him. I think he may have a promising carrer as a james bond villain ahead of him...

Well actually it was IIRC Bhodi that placed you in the maze to hunt for you - and futhermore - it was stated by the one jugding you in the end of the maze, that none had survived through it.

And futhermore - they couldn't make a villian you couldn't kill - where would the fun be in that.
*Oh sorry - you can't destroy the villian, he is to clever for you - though luck, be sure to buy our next game*

in all fairness you are a demi-god, so i suppose such extraordinary feats in spellhold are undestandably easy, but nonetheless, he does repeatedly forget about you or chronically underestimate you. good for the game, not so good a reflection on irenicus the eejit.

Spoiler:

Suldendansar:

Jon: What...who... who DARES!?!
Me: I Dare(Paraprased)
Jon: You, you barely have a fraction of your soul, yet you continue to foil me at ever turn! Enough!

Irenicus sucks, go Searvok

Say what you will about the characters, whose voice is more evil? obviously Jonny wins this one. Saervok's voice is one of pure evil, but Irenicus is one of pure cunning and brilliance. David Warner's tremendus voice is enough to make him best bad guy in any game ever created. Period.

I personally liked Sarevoks voice better, though it's hard to compare the two, as the one is the badassed fighter studying the arts of intimidation...(wow) and the other is a mage...(in BG1 Sarevoks "real" intelligence was 14 - which is rather impressive for your usual "i'm the badest ever with the biggest biceps in town" kind of character)

Yet I still think that Sarevok was the cooler villian, also, he was at least smart enough to accept the fact that your lowlevel wannabe hero was actually able to foil his plans.

True, but I still gotta side with Irenicus. I meen put yourself in his shoes. He's a high level extriemly succesful and talented mage, faced with you- a 7/8 level character who was until recenetly his prisoner- I mean would you run?

If you had to reload at any point during the game, then effectively, Irenicus was right, you were too weak... you lost.

Indeed. :D

But, let's be fair to Jonny...
  • He does not throw you into the maze himself (Bodhi does that), although he is foolish enough to trust his vampiric sister with a fascinating new plaything.
  • Bodhi's hunt originally had a timer, but that was disabled before the game was released. The code is still there, though.
  • The Slayer change is quite remarkable since you were just drained of your godly powers.

You've got to hand him one thing, though... he doesn't go in for the "exposition". ;)

Also, almost all fantasy villians share the same and often fatal flaw:the more powerfull they are,the more arrigant the become.
Irenicus was too powerfull compared to the protagonist in the begining. It was not underestimation that proved his downfall but overconfidence in his own superiority.Hell, even Sauron in the lotr was laid low the same way(almost).
In comparison to Sarevok I think that Irenicus is a better villian.

It's understandible that you would agree, seeing as how you took your name from someone extriemely brilliant, cunning and Extriemely Secritive, who ploted world domination, among meny other things.
