The title says it all. I wonder if @scottg knows.

Yup.

If the challenging rating is higher for the enemy than your party (..which I believe is referenced by your highest level character which includes level penalties and XP class penalties), then you get more points.

Level-squatting is very useful in SOZ, and particularly so because the XP isn't a "dump" across all party members, but rather only those at the time of the kill.

This means that if you lower your party member count to 3, 2, or even 1 - THEN you can gain a boat-load of XP for that one character (or less for 2, or 3). Note though that you can't get rid of characters you've made.. so if you start the game with more than one character you'll never be able to lower that party-count to less than your starting party.

At the Swordcoast you can use the "Adventurers Academy" to convert gold (from your trading) into XP to level-up the rest of your party.

scottg, it isn't the highest member of the party for the overland map grinding.. I leveled my map archer to max and used the lower party members squatting and I got much more for the overland map grinding.

I also tested difficulty settings and it does not matter what difficulty setting you use.

The adventurers Academy is great. I ditched Umoja for my sword coast grinding and was getting 600 xp for brown bears (CL 12). Then when I had my endgame xp level I just added Umoja back and raised him to level 18 using the trade bars gold.

I haven't tested this but I think you can export your characters and delete them and then just add back from the export. You can do this at the Inn. The only character you can't do this trick with is the leader.

Ah, it's an aggregate from the members in your party then. My bad.

As for difficulty - I thought you meant the difficulty of the opponent, as in its CL (or class level).. NOT the difficulty setting on the game itself. Again, my bad.

I thought that it saves the characters in each save file (without the ability to remove them).. and that export is only a "copy" function. If it isn't then that technique might be interesting.. still, seems like a lot of effort for this game.

Yes scottg, no problem. Thanks for even commenting. I am at the point in the game where I always lose interest. I can grind for ages on the map, but then I am geared up and lose heart for the game. This time I am trying to beat the game and 'check' the game off of my list of games that I have played but not beaten. Usually I have a hard time beating games aside from ARPGs. Anyhow, thanks for commenting. I will keep in mind what arrows to load my archer crewmen/women up with to beat the herald.

Also note that the Herald has about 40-46 AC (I think, but likely dependent on the game's difficulty setting).. so you'll need to have good attack numbers for those archers.

It would be useful to have the Bard up to level 18 for Legionnaire's March. (..though just level 14 get's Inspire Courage up to +3.)

Don't forget Curse Song and Curse of Impending Blades (assuming its spell resistance is knocked-down) to lower AC. ..maybe even Taunt as well?
