Question about Game Difficulty

I think I read somewhere that the game will adjust the difficulty of certian encounters (and possibly quests) to reflect the current strength of your party.
Does anyone know what the game looks at to determine how powerful your party is? My thinking is that it just checks the level of your party members but I am not sure if it checks magic items as well???
Thanks,

It only checks the level of the protagonist, if I'm not quite mistaken.
And I think the highest level encounters will be at the level of 15 or so for SoA. (This is not a known fact to me, just observed by playing)

It checks the pro's XP, to be even more precise.

some battles are more difficult depending on the level of the main character. as for example:
miniscule spoiler but ill label it anyway:
the fight with the vampires: some people said that they faced just 3 when they were low in level, however, when i soloed i found at least 10 of em. sucky battle that was....

I'm playing the game for a second time, and I noticed that I've found an awful lot of liches that I didn't have to fight last time.

at gavin,
that is probably reflective of at what point in the two games you went to spellhold. I'm presuming your talking about the umar hills with respect to all the liches.
if you go get imoen before doing the umar hills, the umar hills dungeon will have three liches.
if you do umar hills before going after imoen, the liches will not be present, they will be greater mummies. huge difference.

why is it that way and not the other way around? ive always done umar hills before going there (easy exp in my point of view), but wouldnt it then make sense if you are tougher (exp from umar hills) you should face tougher enemies? i think this is just stupid... but where do you encounter em?

thanks for sharing your opinion on something being stupid. It is, in fact, a typo and I meant the opposite of what I said.
The way I typed it isn't stupid, however, it certainly isn't a very logical progression to the game.

Actually I've been running into parties consisting of two skeleton warriors, two greater mummies, AND a lich. Two of those parties in the Temple Ruins, one in the Undead Village in the Sewers, and one in the Spellhold Dungeon. Made for a heck of a fight each time.
