Witcher 3 - riding a horse

witcher 3 question.
Do I have to ride a horse throughout the game or can I do the whole game on foot?

I'm pretty sure you can get off the horse whenever you want. It's just there as an option, given the distances. (And Geralt frequently rides a horse in the book. It's always called "Roach".)
