how does it work?

so, we all know IWD2 is using 3ed combat tables, and weapon specialisatin does not give extra attacks. now, could someone explain me this:
say i am a level 1 fighter. that gives me +1 attack bonus. now, say i have 18 STR, that's +4, total +5. now, i find a sword+1, which gives me a +6 bonus! does this mean i get an extra attack at +1? or i have to wait until my BASE attack bonus is +6 (at level 6, IIRC)?
and with ranged weapons, does it work the same with DEX bonus?
thnx

mingling of 3rd edition rules blows chunx. Everyone should have boycotted the rules changes. I guess I just too old and too old fashioned to learn a new system.

I don't know if this is how it'll work in IWD2, but according to my friend who plays 3e D&D, "you wait 'till base attack bonus is there." He also says it works the same way with the Dex bonus.

If they go directly with how 3e works, it's if your base attack reaches +6. Magical and ability bonuses don't affect the number of attacks you make.

I'm sorry, but i have to say that i do like 3rd Ed. rules.
I roleplay pnp once a week, and well, it works fine for me.
Not that i did like the old 2nd Ed AD&D rule, but these 3rd Ed rules are just a bit more simple. But, that's my view.

I really like what they did for 3E rules (except for the gazillion Prestige Classes...). Much more streamlined and sensible that AD&D with its endless exceptions and obscure references.
Mingling of the two systems sucks, though. Why can't they just go all the way? And why stick to BG's rotten weapon proficiencies system? You're the greatest swordmaster that ever lived, but you wouldn't be able to tell the business end of a katana, scimitar or shortsword from the grip? Right...

I can't agree more. So you know how to use a long sword, but when you pick up a short sword, you have no idea how to use it. I don't think so.

I'm also a fan of the new rule system. It's significantly easier. Roll a d20, add this, and there you go. Thac0 was a confusing bit of a mess, as were saving throws in second edition. I like the idea with the spell save DC's too. It makes more sense that spells from a powerful wizard would be harder to avoid.
