Choosing a character

i have been playing BG and Bg2 for a while now and the biggest problem that i have faced is picking out a good, fun character to play. I have already beat the game with an sorcerer, archer, barbarian, fighter, solo Kensai/mage. Now I would like to play the game all the way through (to ToB) and i need to know a class that would be great for that?

Try a single-/multi-class cleric, Paladin, single-/multi-class thief, or bard.
I've played all of the above all the way through:
Cleric (Priest of Lathander in BG2)
Paladin (Cavalier in BG2)
Bard (Blade in BG2)
Fighter/thief

The classes you've mentioned are all pretty powerful. maybe you could try a less powerful class, a bard- or thiefkit.
I've had a lot of fun playing classes I never thought I'd like (stalker, jester). Who knows, it could turn out that you'll love the beastmasterkit! (then again, maybe not...

Maybe you should try Cleric/Thief, it's quite fun to play and you can play with a small group, just add one fighter and one mage (if you want to solo this class is difficult, because C/T lacks the necessary punch sometimes, especially at low levels).

Paladins (Cavalier) and Rangers (Stalker) are IMO the most fun classes to play.

Indeed. Back to the PnP roots and cast hold person on anything that moves. If it still moves, backstab it.
The only backdraw with starting in BG1 is that you can't create a half orc. The other possible race, the gnome, starts with -1 WIS. But the WIS-tomes in BG1 should take care of that problem.

Neutral or Evil would be my bet - think Tiax!

He tries to start neutral, discovers that Helm is the god who represents neutrality in BG2, runs away screaming and becomes evil.

It finally comes down to two of the tests in hell in BG2 - Greed and Pride. Yes, my C/T is greedy and yes, he's proud. And if he wants four dragons on his hitlist before entering ToB, well ... ain't no way around it.

I see....
Yes but in the end it doesn't really matter... Your hit list isn't going to effect whether or not someone is going to try to hunt you down. Either way I seem to like a Mage/Cleric... Especially with lost of Haste Spell... Cast and Run... Cast and Run

My first char to complete BG1 and ToSC then go through BG2 was a ranger - then Stalker. You are right, she was fun. But much more fun than that - and surprisingly powerful by ToB was my Druid Avenger...she is pretty awesome. I have restarted BG1 with a single class druid, with the intention of picking up the Avenger kit again in BG2 and taking this class all the way through the BG series...

I did the same (ranger - stalker) and it was a lot of fun.
Now I'd like to take a cleric through the series. I have to be careful choosing the alignment however because that dictates what cleric I'll be able to take in BG2.
What would be the best race for cleric, BTW? Gnomes and halflings get a wisdom-penalty.

Halflings have a strength penalty, not wisdom. With the exception of gnomes the race doesn't matter matter much unless you want to dual class.
A halfling cleric would be nice. If you want a little more emphasis on the fighting capabilities, a F/C would be fine too (dwarf comes to mind, unfortunately there is no such thing as a Clangeddin priest kit, I once had one as PnP character and he insisted that his two-handed silver axe was his holy symbol, not just a weapon
).

Don't ask me why.

I played an elven cleric all the way through the series - choosing the Priest of Lathander kit in BG2. She was surprisingly powerful, even in BG1. I think halflings make good clerics, too - they get that THACO bonus with slings, and have great saving throws. The WIS penalty is not such a big deal considering certain Tomes and particular ring are conveniently scattered about BG1.
