Thats sort of what I've been saying...
China treats its people it sh*t, but what is anyone going to do about it? China has the worlds largest armed forces (IIRC).

China may have the world's largest armed forces, but remember that in 1990, Iraq's was the fourth largest and the Coalition forces chewed them up and spit them out. However, we won't make any serious moves against China because they represent one-fourth of the world's potential consumers whom we can dump our own surplus products, plus they're willing to work in sweatshops and make Nike shoes and Levi's jeans for $3 a day.

I wander why the US closed their eyes about the genocide in Turkey, but started spitting bombs all over Kosovo. I guess that if I find an answer to my question I will also find an answer to yours. And it wasn't even Dubyah's fault, the power was in Clinton back then..
edit>
I never read the whole topic before I posted this... but now after reading HLD's reply it seems that he answered my question pretty well...

Also, doesn't Saudi Arabia have the same sort of oppressive gouvernment like the Taliban? Difference: Saudi gives the US oil.

Compared to the Taliban, Saudi Arabia's government looks like the Love Boat. Mind, I'm not recommending Saudi Arabia's typically Mid-Eastern treatment of women (which, IMO, stinks) nor am I terribly fond of aristocracies unless I'm included.

But the Taliban used a very strict Shi'ite interpretation of the Qu'ran that was so conservative it was even considered ridiculous by the Imams of Iran, who are notorious for their own strict religious constructionism.
By contrast, the Saudis are considerably more liberal in regional terms. Not as much as Egypt and certainly not as much as Turkey (which was deliberately set on a non-Islamic course when it ceased to be an empire and became a republic), but still, pretty good. I've known a number of American men who worked there for several years, and found that the culture was interesting, and hardly restrictive if you didn't go out and deliberately offend the locals.

A friend of mine works in Dubai (In the United Arab Emirates- which is acountry I'm not exactly clear about) a lot- and says that there are almost no natives there. He says it is one of the most beutiful places he has ever been to.
Example- in his hotel the cheapest room was 1200 dollars- which granted could be a lot for one night- but you get what you paid for. Its 2 floors, 45 inch TV, huge window with a view, beutiful bath and top of the line service- plus an amazing pool that has huge water slides and one that even goes up! (I saw pictures of all this.)

Where anything is that sybaritic, there has to be a lower maintaining class.

True, but in this case it is less so. From what I've heard a lot of the staff are from other countries, and that people there have too much mony to spend- which is why they built an amazing tourist atraction.

the Texas pronounciation of the letter 'W'. The 'W' is the only way to distinguish him from his dad GB senior.

I will only comment to make some factual corrections.
@ Fable, the taliban are Sunni not Shi'ite.
They followed a strict (er) version of what is in Saudi.
In Saudi women can not vote, drive cars, or leave the house with a hijab or without the company of a man. This is for both muslim and non-muslim women.
Schools are divided, males on one side, females on the other.
Female education exists is so lacking that it is basically non-existant.
There is very very very little difference between what the Saudi dictators do and what the Taliban did.
