I've played lots of RPG games since Might & Magic 1 and Eye of Beholder Series. On the old days I prefer to play Might Magis series since they have Wizard Eye spell which enable you to see the map, not to mention they have minimap. On the other hand ADND require iron nerve and lots of time to exploring. I remember when I played Eye of Beholder 1 which is quite frustating since the game looks very boring for non RPG hardcore gamer due the dungeon exploring in most of the game.

Nowadays M&M series have more difficult puzzle while ADND move up to realistic view like Baldur Gates series & IWD.

IMO M&M stressed on financing since we can "buy" almost anything for example you can train your character to increase their skill on a certain training facility for a certain sum. The worst is you require to train your character on certain training facility which require a certain sum too. Also the training facility was limited to train into certain level so you require to find the other training facility in order to gain level advance.

ADND system don't need that training since the caracter automatically gain level if their exp pts reach it.

I'll stick to ADND nowadays due their improvement on game view like BG & IWD. How about you ?

Definitely staying with the 'new breed' of game - I can't imagine going back to EotB series, or where it all began for me - 'Dungeon Master'.

Things evolve - just like I graduated from PnP AD&D to DM on the PC, I've subsequently kept evolving with the genre (through various other RPG's, some of which were terrible.... ) to the present Baldur's Gate series. Playing with yourself has never been so much fun .

The next step is real time online role play without the lag. The technolgy is there but the commitment from the service providers isn't. At present we have a load of great developers turning out what are reported as being first rate games (NWN & DS) - certainly I'm salivating at the prospect of them - but until bandwidth is not an issue and we ALL have reliable, cost effective xDSL or better always on connections - the step to the next level will have to wait........

(Probably more pertinent to those of us in the U.K at present...)

I see M&M, Eye of the Beholder, IWD etc, as belonging to the dungeon crawl genre, while BG2, P:T, Betrayal at Krondor and Ultima VII are CRPGs. There are differences. The former is all about combat strategies and party management; the latter is also about the individuality of the party personalities, the storyline, and immersion in a mini-culture.
