The Valentine's Day Massacre -- The Valentine's Thread for Bitter Single Folks

Post by Der-draigen »

Well well well, here it is again, that Hallmark holiday specially designed to make single people, people without a significant other -- heck, even people who just can't get a date -- feel pretty gosh darn worthless. It's as if Someone Big and Important said, "Yes, let's pick out a specific day of the year to remind people just how lonesome and hopeless they really are. Because they're really not aware of it, they need to be beaten over the head with the facts. Let's remind them of their Loser Status by shoving happy, romantic couples down their ridiculous throats!!"

Personally, I've never had a Valentine's Day that was worth anything.

Ever break up with someone just before Valentine's Day? I have, twice. Loser.

Anyway -- if you hate Valentine's Day as much as I do, come on in here and sit a spell. We can cry in our beers whilst listening to bawl-music of choice.

*Opens a Killian and puts Roy Orbison on the CD*
"I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."

"So do all who live to see such times; but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."

Ahh, Valentine's Day. The most pointless holiday in the year (and that's saying alot).

Wow, congratulations Homer. You showed your affection for one whole day! Your significant other may be proud of you, but I think that's pretty darn pathetic.

What makes 1 day out of 365 so much more appropriate for being romantic? Valentine's day is an excuse for people to get away with nothing for the rest of the year.

You want romantics? Last time I checked people liked spontaneity.

Der-draigen. You really should write greeting cards. *wiping away a tear* Will you be my anti-Valentine? We can celebrate by drinking too much and flaming happy couples :)

@Quark: My sentiments exactly. Like my mother says: "If you can't be nice to me while I'm alive, don't bring flowers to my funeral."

Valentine's is just another manufactured holiday, made to generate capital. The gift-giving and general money-spending is encouraged to support the economy.

I also think it's an evil plot to drive up the suicide rate ;)

@Waverly: I should indeed write greeting cards. Valentines for Bitter Singles. To boost my own personal economy :D

Now this is comfortable ...

Well done, Der-draigen (where is the name from, anyway?). I'll join you, your Killian's, and your Roy Orbison with me, my Paulaner, and my Chris Isaak - same diff.

Why don't you tell me all about why men are idiots, I'll trade my war stories of cruel women, and we'll both have a good laugh ... or cry, depending on how many beers we have had.

Yeah...my ex-girlfriend broke up with me for the third time last Monday, though we never actually got back together after the first time she broke up with me, which was the day after my birthday last year.

For the first time in my life, I'm single and not looking.

*pulls out a Romulan Ale and puts on All My Ex's Live In Texas* Y'know, excluding the fact that I'm in Arizona rather than Tenessee, this song is pretty accurate about me. :D

Oh, the irony!

I don't know what the advertising banners say where you are located, but in a cruel twist of fate, the banner at the top of my GameBanshee forum right now is "Roses, roses, roses - from flower.com!" Argh. Twist the knife, why don't you?

On AIM earlier, there was an ad for romance novels. ¬_¬

Ned would surely love that one!

*gets himself a Guiness while listening to all those "valentine angst"* Hey, fellas I DO KNOW what you guys are going through, like, been there, HAD that, and got the freaking scar Image to wear it for eternity...

...but I'm married now, and happily at that.

But still, it doesn't change much that eeky bitterness whenever I remember having those doggone days in the past...

...as for VD, well, to hell with that yearly celebration! Image

I celebrate it with my wife (even if we're miles apart) on a daily business. :)

No, I'm not putting lemon in your scarred wound there...

... just reminding you that no matter what you have gone (and probably still going) through, somethings are bound to happen that would make you happy. (talking a phenomenon here not just an entity)

@der Moench: Der-draigen is a very old Gaelic name, from around the 12th century.

Cruel women? I'd like to hear it if you want to share. I'd like to think guys aren't the only predators who enjoy ripping people's hearts out and scattering the pieces so far abroad that they'll never all be found...

I'm getting the same pop-up ads. And helpful romance tips on my main ISP menu.

Thanks HLD! :) That is hilarious and much-needed.

Why don't we add some scholarly input here, just so this won't end up in a drunken weep-fest? It can now be a scholarly drunken weep-fest :D

I'd like to examine some of the reasons why people hurt each other so excruciatingly. Is it just selfishness?...Is it hormones?...Is it upbringing, kind of like cultural brainwashing?...

Of course we don't have to talk about this stuff. Just thought I'd throw it out there and see what comes up.

Where are you going to flame first?

I'm busy working on the 14th. Washing dishes in a posh restaurant after happy couples had romantic dinner.

How sad... :(
