Beholders, the Cloak of Mirroring and my THACO

When I fight beholders with the cloak of mirroring, all of the spells do not effect me (they do not reflect back to the beholder as I have heard it can do). I do not get hit by the spells but slowly my THACO gets raised. I was fighting a large number of them and couldn't figure out why I wasn't hitting them any more and I looked at my record and my THACO was 63 and 62 for both hands. So I ran away and waited and my THACO slowly went back down. When I went back to fight then, it slowly went back up. Has anybody else had this happen to them? And if so what is it? I don't think they are casting anything on me to raise it and if so I have the cloak so it shouldn't effect me.

That's very strange indeed!
I know that some monsters have spells and abilities that raises your thac0 - but not to that degree.
Is you thac0 only increasing while fighting beholders?
By the way, the cloak of mirroring was changed in ToB. The old SoA cloak reflected spells as the 7th level mage spell "spell turning", but if you have ToB installed, it "only" absorbs the spells as the 6th level mage spell "spell deflection" - though the cloak doesn't - as the spell does - absorb maze...
If you want the old effect back, just delete the file clck26.itm in your override folder. I would advise you to keep a backup of the file somewhere else though - just in case.

Very strange...
the spells are not bounced back, probably 'cause you have
ToB installed. Do you have it?
The cloak is modified in ToB

Yes I do have ToB. I knew that the animation of the cloak effect changed from SoA to ToB but I was not aware that its function also changed. I have not noticed my THACO being raised by any other creature that I fight. I could understand if it raised a bit because of some spell or something but from -1 to 63 seems extreme.

My guess is it is because beholders tend to cast slow, which is a non damaging spell and hence not bounced or absorbed by the cloak. Slow raises your thac0 by 4 and is cumulative with itself. Unfortunately the ring of free action does not stop the raised thaco of this spell.

Hummm, slow. That makes sense. I do have the ring of free action and the boots of speed and when slow gets cast on me, I thought it didn't effect me. Next time I am fighting someone that cases slow, I will check out my thac0. Thanks.
