Fate or just plain lucky...

I'm talking about the Australian speed skater who after landing on a competitors skate shoe blade a few years ago, and recieving a large amount of stitches.
Qualifies for the medal round, remains last through out the race, then when all the other skaters fall on the last corner. He simply glides over the finish line.
From us Aussie's point of view
An actual medal in the Winter Olympics, not bad for the driest continent in the world.

I just saw that--hilarious (for the spectators and Aussies).

I missed it. Sounds like fate played a damn good role in that one

Grats to the Aussies on making the rest of us look stupid

It's just luck!
And I think it's a stupid sport anyway. The keep on adding new sports, even the most ridiculous ones.

No!! It's not just luck!!
The guy said his plan for the final was "wait in the back and hope there will be a collision". He stuck to his plan, and got the reward.
Okay, he got Gold instead of Bronze he was aiming for, and that may be luck. Still, there's no sports which wouldn't be affected by luck, would it?

He was the first guy to cross the finish line; that's all that matters. Maybe he paid the Chinese guy to take out the others . . .
Anyway, there was some rumbling that they should have disqualified the Chinese skater, who caused the collision, and re-run the race. I think the ISU got it right; collisions and slips are part of racing. Just ask any one the 18 guys who got taken out in "The Big One" at Daytona yesterday when Wonder Boy nudged Kevin Harvik.

Philosophy in Olympic Action
I see it as a brutally appropriate analogy of life. You work hard, bust your a$$ to get the life you want, the career you want, etc. etc.; you pour your blood, sweat, and tears into the pursuit of happiness -- and then you fall down, get delayed for just a moment, and some bozo glides effortlessly past you and gets the prize.
Disclaimer: Not calling the Aussie a bozo; just for purposes of the analogy

@minerva, yes the aussie did say that, but he was being sarcastic.
I also agree that all that matters is crossing the finish line first, as Fritz Strobl (winner of the men's downhill) said: Races are not won by reputation, but the fastest racer. ( i think those are his exact words, correct me if i'm wrong).
I also think that Ohno was the best racer on the course, but such is life.

How I laughed

Couldn't believe our first gold medal would be won like that but a gold medal nonetheless.
(I just loved the expression on his face as he crossed the line first. He was still shaking his head on the podium

)

Well, I shouldn't really say this, but it was really all my doing.

So, neither.

I'm using this as an opportunity to blame Aegis for Jack the Ripper, World War I, and Tofu. He'll get his in the end.

I think we can also place Aegis on the Grassy Knoll (he is after all, an alleged ambassadorial assassin, too), on the board at Enron and as a part of the team that conceived Hanson and wrote Mmmm-bop!

Haven't you been watching the whole Enron mess in the news, Aegis? Especially the parts taking place in Congress? Taking the Fifth only makes you look guilty.
