Newbie Gamer - Ranger/Cleric combo sound ok?

I like the melee abilities of a ranger. The ability to cast cleric spells later on as well as the lower level druid spells makes this combination sound like an interesting one.

A few questions:

(1) Will I be able to use non-cleric weapons such as swords later on or will I have to use weapons that only a cleric can use?

(2) I read the dualing to a cleric at level 9 a good idea? Why is this so?

(3) If I decide to play ToB, will dualing to a cleric handicap me at all?

(4) Stats to focus on with a ranger would be Strength, Con, Wis (or cleric later on) and dex for archery - what should I shoot for?
18 STr and 16 Con and minimum 14 or 15 in the other 2?

Thanks for taking a look.

Answers: :)

1) No, your PC will only be able to use weapons a cleric can use, so have him specialize in those before dualing. There are some awesome clerical weapons available, so don't despair over not being able to use swords!

2) Dualing at level 9 is good if you do not have ToB installed - since this gives you the maximum possible HP and another weapon proficiency. With ToB, you may want to dual later.

3) Dualing won't handicap you at all, though you may want to dual later, at level 12 or 15. Note: dualed characters won't be able to obtain any high-level abilities in their first class.

4) To be able to dual, you'll need a minimum of 15 in STR and CON, and a minimum of 17 in WIS. Your PC must also be human to dual-class.

Note: In the Baldur's Gate series of games, a dual-/multi-class ranger-cleric has access to all druid spells at all the levels he can cast clerical spells. A ranger dualed to cleric may continue to specialize in weapon proficiencies, once he's regained his ranger class.

Thank-you for your reply Soulcatcher.

Once I dual class to a cleric, I assume the weapon has to be usable by both classes?

I was thinking about going with crushing weapons if I plan to duel him to a cleric.

Warhammers plus either mace or flail. Leaning towards flail because I played a bit and saw Minsc is Mace + and I like him and Boo. Club sounds a bit too pedestrian.

As far as points go, 2 dual wield ( 2 weapon style may be the correct name), 2 in short bows, 2 in warhammers - I think there is one point left. Flail anyone?

Look at my kick-arse solo monk! Also, what quests next for soloing?

First, I'll say a little about him so you can better decide what to do next. He's a level 12 monk. AC -4. Scarlet ninja-to. Daystar. He's pretty sweet, I haven't had to back down from a battle yet and he's soloing. Is level 12 (1,000,000 exp) pretty good for still being in Athkatla? So far I've done circus, slaver, montaron, sewers, Umar hills (not shade part yet), turn in valygar, de'Arnise keep (kinda hard soloing). Now I can do the shadow wolves quest, windspear hills, unseeing eye, korgans quest, but for some reason nobody contacted me about trademeet yet!? I need to go get belt of inertial barrier! Do I talk to someone or does a little kid come tell me or something? I dont have to have jahiera do I? What quest should I do next (remember, im soloing)? oh yeah and planar sphere too i need to do.

Just wanted to say this also: monks kick arse! In the slaver part of copper coronet, I was killing literally ALL the guards with one hit each from my scarlet ninja-to! nice! As crazy as it sounds, a lot of parts are actually EASIER than when i had a 6 people party. go figure.

SOrry for the long post, but please answer my trademeet question, and quest question. thanks.

You like the monk - fine. Now stop spamming, please. This is the 4th post about this very topic... You have even gone so far as to copy-paste the text. :(

Clerics can't use bows, so put two *'s in slings, instead. If you plan to have your ranger-cleric dual-wield, you'll want to give him mastery (3 *'s) in two-weapon style ASAP. Flail and Hammer are a great combination in this game.

Thanks again Soujourner.

I got through the 1st dungeon and realized I clicked on 2 hand weapons instead of dual wield lol. That plus short bows will cause me to reroll.

Slings - I was looking forward to popping some arrows into the mobs but I have to remember I will become a cleric.

I wonder if Archer is a tough class for a newbie to play.

Ranger/Cleric is fantastic. As Sojourner said flails & hammer dual wield id deadly. But ranger/clerics get alot of spells, all the cleric spells + druids spells too. Lot's of fun.
