Its basicly a measure of how far into a romance you are. Every time there is a dialogue, the LoveTalk goes up by one or two. Say, the Aerie Romance has a LoveTalk of 49, and Jaheira has one of 74.

The game uses numbers called GLOBALS to determine what happens. So the way it decides what 'Love Dialogue' to play for you (you know, when all the flowery music comes up and your current partner whispers sweet nothings at you) is it checks to see what the LoveTalk GLOBAL is set to and plays the corresponding dialogue. When the Dialogue is over (assuming you said all the right things) it will bump the LT Global up by a certain amount (usually one or two) so that next time it checks to see what the Love Talk rating is, it will play the dialogue which comes after the one you just did.
so there you go. When Gaxx says that Aerie has Love Talk 49, he means that by the time you have gone through all the Romance Dialogues correctly, the LoveTalk Global will be set at 49. When the game next checks to see which dialogue it should play, it will see 'ahh, the LT global is 49, I'd better not play any more dialogues'. LT 49 is the HIGHEST that you can get to with Aerie, and when you do get there the romance is over.
hope that helps

actuallt I just remembered the Love Talk variables are LOCALS not GLOBALS but that doesn't really matter.
Tell me if you want to know how to manipulate the Romance variables to move back or forwards in the romance

Manipulate the Romance Variables? Tsk, Frogus
'Love Talk' (Not LuvTalk) is when men reach deep within themselves and express their feelings for women. Clearly, most men do this incorrectly by saying such lines as:
'Honey, you're blocking the t.v.'
'I want you bad, sexy mama'
or
'Nice...umm.... *eyes focused on female's chest* ...necklace'
How can this be fixed? Not by manipulating variables, but by using honesty and kindness in discourse. This same tactic will work with most BG romances as well
There, I've spammed the BG2 board, I best get back to where I'm wanted

Well, Vivien.
I think you tracked down a very elemental problem about us males...
We seldom do reach deep within ourselves because we fear there's nothing we could find
I will be flamed by many users here soon, I suppose, but I just had to support your point of view, since you are one of the weaker sex opposing an army of male users in this forum.
Curse me for a fool, but I think women are the greatest invention made in the long agony of male mankind!
One more thing: Real "Love Talk" can be very seductive. If you haven't yet: Try it out ASAP!

Back to topic, please.
If you want to spam the issue, there's already a topic made for the point up in the Speark Your Mind category.

I'm no expert, I just cut and paste from the likes of Sabre or Sojourner
This is how one enables cheats to be able to change love talk:
In order to use these codes, you must first edit the Baldur.ini file located in your BG2 directory. Under the Program options heading add the line "Debug Mode=1" (without the quotes). You will then be able to open the console during the game, which will allow you to enter the cheat codes. To open the console while playing, press CTRL+SPACE.
Doing a search under clua and romances, I found this from Kordeth. (Substituate the name of the person you are romancing for Jaheira in the following).
And, to close, here are a few handy CLUAConsole commands--use them wisely.
CLUAConsole:GetGlobal("Lovetalk","LOCALS") - Chect your love talk rating with a given character. You must have your mouse pointer over that character's portrait to use this.
CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("LoveTalk","LOCALS",XX) - Sets your love talk to a given rating, where XX is a number.
CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("JaheiraRomance","GLOBALS",1) - Re-sets the countdown timer to one, forcing the next romance dialogue to begin.
This checks the lover talk value.
Hope this helps, and again, if I made mistakes, thanks to those who correct me
Fable: Oops.
*hug*
mabrook: Well, I best get back to SYM
As to women holding their own in male dominated boards...well, I think we have little to no troubles

There's a new counter in TOB, ExpLoveTalk.
