One thing i hope they do add in IWD II is XP for thieving tasks (as in open lock , disarm trap and so on...) and also for learning new spells like in BG II. There is along of XP to gain this way. ;)

But does "more experience" automatically equate to "more fun"? I once played an excellent multiplayer online game for about ten years. During the first few, just as the web was starting up, it was hardly known at all, and it took perhaps a good year to make 20th level (and get your "lord/lady" title), and another one or two to become a "legend" (50th level). Several years on, after a stint on AOL and then it's own site on the net, they've revamped the game, and people make lord/lady in under a month. The title means nothing, and the acquiring of it gives you hardly sense of accomplishment.

I agree, I enjoy earning my experience for hard battles not using something that can automatically come for using a thief's ability. It makes it an actual reward...

Yes, if it was a hard task, not a simple open lock, maybe part of a puzzle for a thief. Like pnp roleplaying. And even when you so succeed, not 4000xp but 400xp would just do. Just a bit each time. But it's nice to get a reward, even a small one.

...took perhaps a good year to make 20th level .

Yes, i agree with that too. Going up 2 or 3 level in a day is not really fun.

But as i said, it would be nice to give out some XP for those skills, like thieves, 'cause some people don't play hack n slash only.

I agree with Onyx. For me, at least, if it takes too long to reach the next level, it becomes very easy for me to start to get bored(something that's already very easy for me). However, leveling up too fast can have the same effect.

You must have lots of fun watching the news: If the topics are too long, you get bored. If they are too short, you get bored too. :D :D :D

What exactly was this game called? It sounds interesting.

I think that xp points for theiving tasks and for learning spells is a good idea - if you are playing as a theif and and stealing every buggers underwear then you should earn points as u practise ur skills - dont you gain experience in your field by doing something from that field? i.e a fighter gets xp for chopping someone to bits, so why cant Mr nimble fingers get xp for flogging a purse?

I always thought it a little biased that xp comes mainly from cutting someone to bits. How does an early mage get lots of xp??

Perhaps the XP's shouldn't be distributed to all of the characters, but instead go to the character who performs the action! How is a fighter going to benefit from watching a thief work a lock? How is a cleric going to gain knowledge from watching a mage add a spell to his spellbook?
I do think that the exception to this rule will be combat, every character plays a part in some way, even if it is just playing a song for a bard. Also campaign XP's should be given to every character, because they all contribute in some way, otherwise they wouldn't be in the party!
This may seem like it benefits some characters over others, but since everyone has a specialty, it should even out. The more powerful classes will be at a slightly lower level than others, but hey, a 4th level fighter is as good in combat an 8th level thief (or at least they used to be...)
As a side note, I think that clerics should get XPs for turning undead successfully.

Wouldn't know. I avoid the news altogether. ;) :p

sounds very sensible....... maybe it could all be done like this -

Everyone gets Xp for fighting and quests.
-fighters get extra for intimidating and bluffing in dialouge
-rouges for their succesful use of skills (pick lock....)
-mages for memorizing spells
-clerics for turning undead
-rangers for doing something with little fuzzy animals..... (like charming them!!!)

I havent missed any major groups have I???

tell me what u think.....

I am not sure how exactly they could implement it, but I would like to see it! Your take on the class/xps is good. Everyone has a job to do and you learn from experience. It just makes sense.

One of the rules that I remember from old school D&D is that Clerics actually "request" spell from thier Deities. They can ask for what they want, but may not necessarily get it, after all who knows the future needs of the flock better than God? maybe they could implement at system based on Wisdom where a Cleric gets to pick his spells and gets XPs if he can convice his god to grant his requests. It would be based on his alignment, his past actions and his casting history. It would probably be a behind the scene calculation sort of thing, but it might be interesting...

For a moment there i thought you were meaning something else... :p ;)

It would be a good idea to get xp for all character classes (from their "jobs") or none altogether, and not divide it (what would a mage learn from seeing a rogue dismantle a trap?(well, maybe a bard would get inspiration for a new song or ballad... ;) ))

@stranger: i think of bluff as more of a rogue skill, since they are more sneaky and dirty-fighting.

Oops - yea I guess the bluff thing would be more a rogue skill.

and @ stranger - I recall the request thing from a book I read (I havent ever really played D&D board games). It sounds like a good idea - the only problem was the deity "knew" what the dudes were going to need (implementing???) - I guess the clerics could just ask and have a roll vs wisdom as to whether they would get the spells.........

Oops again - its a bit off the thread......... oh well, you get that.

That sounds excellent to me. I would probably base the roll vs Wisdom. Sort of like the God of the PC is watching and seeing how wise the character is in his selections.
Bards get XP's for Lore/Item ID.
Fighters might be able to get extra XPs for fighting a monster for the first time. Like a one time bonus for each monster type...
