A thiefs traps does wonders against him. But otherwise.. Protect your party from his spells and keep you casters well away from him and summons as much help as you can.

Hi M8 you will have to tell what class you are that would make it a bit easier. There is a little trick to it no matter what class you are or bring. Once he is spawned go up (north of the hole) there he can not touch you because of his size. He will cast some strong hold spells (as you might have noticed) but once they wear off you are free to do/cast whatever your little heart desires. there is a spell called bolt of glory (cleric lvl six spell) it has a 10d6 Vs demons so that is a good startHi M8 you will have to tell what class you are that would make it a bit easier. I think the easiest way is to turn into the slayer and fight it out hand to hand. Have some healing spells/potions ready.

I came up against this fight really low level. I found that nothing beats a Ring of Free Action, and lots of distraction summons. Move in, bash Balor, Balor notices you (eek!) run away, heal and move back in.

If you are as unprepared as I was first time through, cast everything you've got on a single Fighter and pray :)

If you go for Imoen straight away, I tell you, the Asylm and Underdark seem a lot harder :)

Feed him some summons (Skeleton Warriors if possible) to occupy his Gaze, have someone go Berserk, or cast Spirit Armor and Barkskin and the like on a tank to give him really low saves, then proceed to kick a$$.

I'm not sure what your party/level/equipment/spell situation is but I'll try and give you a few options to cover the ground here.

Now, the Monstrous Manual says that Balor is a +3 or higher to hit monster, but I recall someone saying that he's actually a +4 in BG2. Which is possible since this game really doesn't go straight by the original books.

First, please please tell me that you have Keldorn or at least your own custom Paladin in your group and please tell me that he/she has a Carsomyr...please. If you do, just protect fear on him, and send him in with haste and pray he doesn't get stunned.

If you don't have a Paladin, you're not licked yet. Please say that you at least have someone who can use a two-handed sword well and is NOT of good alignment. If you do, head over to the Kuo-Toa dungeon first and grab the Soul...something...Soul Reaver +4? I dunno just grab it, and use that on Balor. But getting that sword might prove just as tough.

IF the books apply here and Balor is a +3 only, then your task should become much easier, just fear protect one of your guys, give him chaotic command spell or free action and add a dash of haste and send him in.

If somehow you have a Pre-Order bonus disc, you can try the Sling of Evershard, but I don't think that will be able to do it alone.

Balor is one tough cookie so you'll need to drink some healing potions along the way.

Now, if you have NONE of those (shame on you), you can try some spells such as Bolt of Glory, er that other one that hits evil things...the priest one...god, what was it...Holy Smite. The Monstrous Manual also claims that Balors have 70% magic resistance, and through personal experience, that sounds about right. Which means, those spells will need to be accompanied by Lower Resistance if you want to go that route.

Hrmph..Now that I've said it, I don't think Bolt of Glory will work since Balor isn't considered a demon but a planar creature...anyone want to fill me in on this?

If someone becomes feared or stunned somehow, use Dispel Magic, Keldorn is and awesome dispeller since he dispels at twice his actual level.

Man, I just realized how much quoting the Monstrous Manual made me sound like a spaz :P

One last thought. If you find yourself in a totally dire situation, no weapons, no spells, no nothing, just kill the little bastard gnome and take the gem muahahaha. :P

firts time trough i really had a tough fight against Balor he almost killed my whole party,
but when he killed Aerie minsc (half death) went bezerk and kicked his A$$ (before that he couldnt even hit him  :D )

all other 4 times i got to Balor i used the same (maybe little cheesy) tactic:

- summon some pets (they are just decois)
- get a mage or 2 who can cast; Lower Resistance; Greater Massilson; Finger of Death.
- put your mage in the left corner of the room, just above the whole.(Balor can't get there)
- as your pets try to attack Balor cast the spells.
-after the finger of Death he is death :D :D
btw u need about 2/3 Lower Resistances

Thats funny, he fell to sweetie aerie with 3 chained or spell triggered bolts of glory...

hit him with abu dazim to make sure...

but he is definately demonic because the triple bolts of glory wiped him out...

Looking at your party, I'm surprised you had any trouble with him at all, just fear protect Inquisitor and you man with the Sling, and haste them both or give them your boots of speed, and off they go. Might still need to have your inquisitor down a few potions of healing, but shouldn't be all that tough of a fight.
