This will have to depend on your definition of cool. Which kit do you think sounds coolest? Which race do you favor? A few alternatives:

1) Halfling Assassin - I'm small but quite deadly. Oh, you've already noticed? I'll move on then.
2) Dwarven Bountyhunter - Let's fill this dungeons with traps of me clan's making!
3) Halv-Elven Swashbuckler - Well met, miladies. Care for an evening stroll under the stars and my protection?

My personal choice would be halfling F/T. Elves work too, but I don't like to play elven chars. Anyway, DEX is very important.

My weapon choice would be small and long swords plus dual wield and maybe darts or throwing daggers for ranged attacks. Staves are an alternative if you're into powergaming but I can't really imagine a thief with a staff (nor with a bow or crossbow, I think that thieves should use weapons that can be easily concealed and that don't take two hands to use, so a long sword really is the upper limit concerning size).

There are many great armors for thieves, Night's Gift and Armor of the Viper being my favorite ones. Human Flesh is an alternative for an evil character. If you go ToB there is one armor that's even better (small spoiler: Keep that Bladesinger chain you find in the elven city!).

Be careful with Boots of Speed, running around too fast too far often leads to the overlooking of traps. Besides that there are lots of useful miscelaneous items for thieves and fighter thieves.

IMO coolest is human dual fighter/thief. Long swords in both hands, and boots of speed in feet. But Phantom Lord has a point with the danger of running into traps with boots of speed...

My favorite was an elven assassin with the same pic as my avatar. She was absolutely deadly with Celestial Fury. One of my favorite tricks after getting the Boots of Speed (a must for any assassin) and enough points in trap-setting was to back-stab someone (usually killing him) then running away and setting traps for his buddies on the fly. (This works great against mind-flayers.)

Necessary items:

Good leather armor
Boots of Speed
THACO-improving items
Strength girdle
Good backstabbing weapon
Good bow

Bounty hunter is now the strongest cheese character in the game of one-on-one! Fighter-thief can destroy everything else with TOB installed...
