stuck in spellhold - possible spoiler

got into spellhold the first time by letting minsc convince pirate that the party was mad. Irenicus appeared, had dream and was placed in Bhodis prison. That bit was fine, but I thought I'd try getting into spellhold by killing the wizard and stealing his stone. This seemed to be O.K. but I can't access any of the other rooms, and am either stuck in the entrance to spellhold (and the prison bit) or have to leave again without Imoen. Can't open any doors with spells or lockpick. Do I need a specific key. Is it worth me bothering this way, or should I just reload the game from my first attempt?

I'm not sure I understand where you are. You're in the "entrance" to Spellhold: do you mean you've entered the first room of the main building, and Irenicus hasn't approached you? Please be clearer.

entered the first room and was greated by the hooded figure, who walked off immediately and didn't return. Have access to the prisoners including Imoen (who is confused) but cannot open any of the doors to the rooms blacked out on map (tried thief skills and spells). Have waited but Irenicus hasn't shown up. All I've been able to do is speak to prisoners and get recipes/small girl polymorph etc.

I've got a previous saved game from when I was admitted by the pirate leader, and Irenicus showed up then. Had the dream of bhaal in candlekeep, was experimented on and sent to prison/maze of vampire woman.

I just wanted to try the game by walking through the front door of spellhold, but seem to be stuck. Looked at walkthroughs, and they tell me that a key is in one of the blacked out rooms, but as I can't access that room am not sure what to do.

I think you may have to rest before he shows back up. I remember doing that one time and it worked for me.

I'd go back to your autosave that occured directly before entering Spellhold. Try reentering. I never rested and everything went fine, but if that doesn't work, try what Bloodstalker suggests.

resting didnt work, and i'd already gone out of spellhold so the autosave didn't help. I had the old save game from when I was admitted as mad, and just played from there. Have just gone to the city of the shark people, so everything O.K. Just wanted to make sure that I didn't miss anything when entering from the front door. Thanks for suggestions
