Chess board in Durlag's Tower...

So ah...what's going on with this chess board? I figure the best strategy is to just load my mages up with fireball spells and cast away, but is there any other strategy any of you have for it. It's probably easier than I am making it out to be, it's just that...well...it's kind of stupid.

It's not chess--it's checkers! I hope you have Alora in your party, because when she gets to the other side of the board you get to double-stack her. A giant hobbit. . .I mean halfling!

Seriously, though, if I remember right, one of your characters--the PC, probably--gets to run around the board freely. That might help you plan a tactic. . .but entangle/web and repeated fireballs is crudely effective.

My party did a lot of damage using ranged weapons and I used a lot of summons to keep the enemy away from my party.

Durlags Chess board

I found this bit difficult. My party consists mainly of range attackers (archers with fire/acid arrows) so I don't use spells a lot
Generally, I target one enemy at a time (mages, spellcasters first in the queue for fire arrows) and use the pause button if I need to get my guys out of the firing line. I've kept Garrick in my party and bought him a magic crossbow and boots of speed. He saves me a lot GPs identifying stuff but costs me a fortune in "bring back the dead" spells, but I like the guy! How did you fare with the Air Aspect?

I let the air aspect chase my char (boots of speed) while the others blasted him with (again) ranged weapons.
I had more trouble with the phoenixguards because my party was hurt and tired and out of spells and the phoenixguards kept exploding in my face. :(

to take care of the phoenix guards jsut sit next to the door and let one come to you and when he does beat him and it automatically transports you to the next room

Easiest way to deal with Phoenix guards: Send your mage or bard in alone and have him/her use a Wand of Frost on the Phoenix guards.

As for the chess board, it's easier if you're solo. Try this: if you're a mage cast minor globe of invulnerability and run around the board. The lightning bolts will kill everybody except yourself.

If you're not a mage, you can use a potion of magic blocking.

I was really disappointed by the chessboard. I expected something more akin to, well, chess. Instead, I'd describe it as (in my best WoW raid-guild making-fun-of-nubs lingo)...

lolsummonz
lolaoe
hai2u invisible traps that i can't disable
pew pew pew
game over

In other words, I just summoned a bunch of monsters, aoed a bit, didn't move any of my guys barely at all, shot things with ranged attacks, and killed the king pretty quick. Also annoying was the fact that I wasn't sure which one of my party members was which piece. And of course, the opposing side didn't seem to be affected by the movement restrictions.

Altogether, thumbs down to that encounter. Just another trapped room full of mobs. Boo on that.

SPOILER: Three ways "dimension door" use thief to find extents of trap and walk round, or go to room to north and west where there is a bone "amulet?"
and insert it where most appropriate
