i was just wondering because i really want the staff of the magi, but couldnt be bothered getting to a really high level and probably getting kicked anyway, so i was thinking i could make a multiplayer game with six lvl 17 paladins each wielding armor of the hart and carsomyr and go in and obliterate them, but is there any specific classes you need i.e do you need to open locks with a good thief or something? sorry if this is the most idiotic post you have ever seen.

It helps to have a thief to open the door leading to the Twisted Rune but other than that, no... its just a standup fight once inside.

A more diverse team will make it easier but it's your game have fun!

solo sorc with simmy or image and farsight and skull trap or better, delay action fireball.

go inside, save game, tehn trigger dialog. use farsight to note exact spawn points of each enemy. put 5 dealy action fire balls into seach point using farsight and project image, tehn trigger dialog, tehy all die, kill sorc with chain contingency, or delay blast firballs.

loot...

You can also try a Protection from Magic scroll. A paladin with Carsomyr and TrueSight could do it in no time IMHO. You can use traps to kill Shangalar instantly, which is cheese but works well.

And if you're a mage/sorc, finish off the witch and grab the staff; you can equip even if you haven't identified it! Unequipping/equipping it gives you invisibility as many times as you like and a little Spell Immunity: Divination renders you truly invisible.

It was so much easier when I did it with my solo sorcerer than when I had a bunch of NPCs: I didn't take a single point of damage!

The staff is kewl.

i did it. too easy

with five paladins (the other was a mage so i could open the locked door) it took me literally about seven seconds. in, talk, shangalar dead within 2 seconds, vamps explode from combined turn undeads, witch dead before even 1 timestop. the staff is overrated. i keep it equipped but use my staff of power so i can talk to people.

my kensai sorc deathbringer hive mother beholder does not want or need staff, but give to aerie or cleric mage, they can equipp, explode undead and walk away. makes killing even demi liches fun...
