Help with Ragpicker's Square

I was wondering if anyone would mind helping me out. I appear to be stuck at Ragpicker's Square. I've been searching for a way into the Trash area, without success. Perhaps the trash filled archway requires a key of some sort in order to pass through - I have no idea. I've spent some time running around the hive, and besides spending some time wacking thugs (that's boring after your first fifty), I'm hitting dead ends. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, how do you get Annah to join you?

Just pick up a pile of junk - several can be found in the Mortuary.
Don't worry about Annah - she'll join your party when you're far enough along in the game.

Remember to also pick up a crowbar from the moturary for later use, trust me you'll need it

Thanks. I committed the error of disregarding unusual items (i.e., the junk in the mortuary) as useless. I should know better than that! However, Planescape is definitely different from other RPG environs, so I should probably err on the cautious side. I just hate hauling tons of junk around!
BTW, I started a new life with a higher INT score. It has had a great impact on the game thus far. My inability to speak to Stale Mary, and my embarrassing failure to answer the Riddling Skeleton, woke me up to the merits of sacrificing some muscle for gray matter. Thanks again!

It's worth doing the game in all sorts of different ways, an intelligent mage, a pure fighter soloing, a thief running around using Back stab, each different character is an alternate experience.

Yeah, so did I. The first run through, I messed things up and took 62 game days to finish Planescape and was a miserable lvl 16 mage. Like Chanak, I too got stuck at Ragpicker's Square for want of a piece of junk
It was a challenging and enriching experience though, one of the best RPGs IMO.
By erring on the cautious side in my second attempt, and after visiting this great site, I managed to complete a lot more quests, aced Planescape in 12 game days and ended up being a lvl 29 mage FWIW.
It's always much harder the first time round.

Is it THAT important?? Don't know fur sure whether I stil have it. If not, where can it be found (in the mortuary?)?
And a question: can the game be finsished with any character? (I should be). I have heard that some people weren't able tot talk to some folks, because int or cha was to low. Lucky I don't suffer from that penalty (int 18, cha 12)

Yes it is that important, at least for me, i can't remember where else you get one
and depending on how you deal with the puzzle before it can leave you stuck.
It can be finished with any character but some of the puzzles have to be done differently, the character you chose alters the game experience a lot.

A prybar can be found later in the game - so you don't necessarily need to pick up the one in the Mortuary.
While a high INT can help you talk your way through situations, a fighter may not always want to do this. There are items available to help you boost your INT for those all-important dialogs, especially at the end of the game. If you have Dak'kon in your group and you're playing a fighter, you may find it worth your while to train as a mage if only to learn the spell "Friends". You can have Dak'kon switch you to mage, cast Friends, and have Dak'kon switch you back again before speaking to someone. Obviously, this option is not available for thieves until Annah joins your party. As with INT, there are also items to boost your CHA.

Hello folks,
why should I carry around the crowbar, I cannot use this item.
Until I became a mage, I could use it, however. I have once smashed a chest.
But now neither I nor my skully (Morte) can use it.

just trust us, you WILL need it eventually. By the way, I never can remember, if you put the crowbar somewhere (like an empty chest), assuming you remember where you left it will it still be there if you come back way later?
