RISK - as in the board game

Who has played Risk? Quite a good game I reckon, although the effect of the luck is rather too wide-spread in my opinion (one reason why I generally prefer computer games).

Specifically I'm wondering if anyone has played Napoleon Edition Risk, which I picked a copy of up in France, and am wondering if its possible to get the Ottoman Empire expansion anywhere in the UK?

I lost the rules for Risk when I was 12 or so. Ever since I've been playing it wrong. :D :D :D

I like Risk. Haven't played in a while, though.

I don't have the updated one, with the separate units for Infantry/Artillery, etc. I have the one with the little stars and triangles. Much simpler and enjoyable. :)

Is that wrong as in "he doesn't know the rules so I'll roll all the dice" :D

Yeah I prefer that version. Although did u know that the infantry just stand for 1, the cavalry for 5 and the artillery for 10? It's like that in the Napoleon edition I've got anyway, and all the other rules are the same.

Except the advanced ones ;) . It has generals, fortresses and fleets. The board is of Europe instead of the world. It works really well, except without the expansion, there are only 5 colours :(

I had a board game of risk but the armies used roman numerals for military units. Once I started playing risk on the mac back in college, I forgot what happened to the board game.

Perhaps this belongs on a different thread but does anyone play diplomacy by avalon hill.

Yeah I have a copy of Diplomacy (in board form anyway). But its hard to get enough people together to play it. I do prefer it to risk though because, as I mentioned above, there is no element of chance (except in the distribution of empires at the beginning).

You can pick up diplomacy for the pc and play email games. lots of fun except the games take weeks.

I also have a board game but it is tough to find a fair number of players most often. Nowadays, it seems the game moves to slow or requires too much attention for most. I think that explains the popularity of the online/PC version. People don't have to play an entire game in one sitting.

I'm in two games; one standard and one varient at the moment. I'll win the standard game due to some particularly twisted negotiations... the varient... the less said the better *mutters about vile backstabbers.*

Would you be interested in SYM DIP? I have the ajudication software.

Assuming that is something to do with Diplomacy (online?) I would like to, as long as you can stomach my handle ;)

I'd have some interest at playing again at some point. It's been many a year since I've played diplomacy. I've seen the pc version of it but haven't played.

@Waverly, you...with twisted negotiations. How out of character  :D No one around here would label you capable of cunning.

Getting enough players in SYM and using PM's would be pretty fun. Now, if only the PM box was bigger.

Ah. I was being dense. SYM DIP = Speak Your Mind Diplomacy. Feel free to laugh at me. But not too much.

Anyway. Yeah, count me in.

I've always wanted to learn to play Diplomacy, but no cash for the game. Any way to learn and play online? :)

Is this software you need to buy, or is shareware you can download? If it's the latter (as I have no money  ) I would love to get in on it.

This costs money. I'll just find out how much.

All about DIP:

First item is the official manual in downloadable PDF format. Kudos to Hasbro for offering it free of charge. You can find strategy, tips, and software tools on the site as well.

Not necessary, but a nice tool:

Not terribly intuitive, but this program allows you to track games, plan moves, and of course adjudicate turns.

Everything linked here is free, but out of fairness I'll plug the original board game as worthwhile purchase for those interested.
