Multiplayer setup/conection problem

Greetings, all. I wonder if someone might be able to help me out with getting my multiplayer game running. Here are the details.

This will be a game where my wife joins in from her computer next to mine and a friend in TX joins in as well.

We all have registered copies of BG 2.

Both my wife's and my computer use a Netgear Router with an ISDN connection. We share this connection and it also functions as a Hub. Both computers have Windows XP, and I have turned the Firewall off inside XP. My friend has a Cable modem, Windows XP, and has turned his firewall off inside XP as well.

Now, when I host a TCP/IP game, my wife can simply enter in the IP address and BOOM - we can play. But when my friend enters in the same IP address, nothing happens.

We all have the latest patches (official and Baldurdash).

Can we not do a direct TCP/IP game via the internet in this manner? Is there some sort of setting I need to enable/disable? When I read about Firewalls I assumed that simply turning off XPs internal firewall would do the trick, but I read somewhere else about Ports and disabling/opening certain ones. If this is the case, would someone mind telling me in simple English how to do this?

My friend tried hosting as well and the same thing occurred. Then we went to Gamespy and tried it there. Funny thing was, neither of us after Creating a game could find the other's listed anywhere. It appeared to US that we had a Room going and game started, but it never showed up in the BG2 area of Gamespy.

I really hope someone can help us here. I've been doing REAL pen and paper gaming with this friend and my wife for over 16 years and now that he's living elsewhere we want to continue :)

I would assume not since your IP specified over the network is not the same one that is used by your ISP for access to the internet.
