Big Trouble at Duchal Palace

I have finished Baldur's Gate II twice, but Baldur's Gate has got me stuck.
Within a few seconds of confronting Sarevok in the Duchal Palace, my main character (a level 7 Mage) is instantly killed - no warning. I can't figure out who is killing him. I have tried hardening him in various ways but no joy. The death blow appears to be an Agannazar's Scorcher.
None of my other characters die. I have tried to kill all the opplegangers before confronting Sarevok - it makes no difference. I have tried moving my mage to other rooms and even up stairs- again no difference.
Could you help me out here?

Are you getting any type of error message? What exactly does the combat text say? BTW, you must keep Belt or Liia alive, or the game will automatically kill you.

No error messages.
>>What exactly does the combat text say?
Usually, when my main character dies, the dialog box disappears, and the game cuts to the disappearing hand. Once, when I was able to pause the game, the text indicated the name of the enemy who had just delivered the fatel blow but I don't remember who it was. I never could locate this character.

My strategy is to kill Liia and keep Belt alive. Once both of them died and all I got was a mocking message from Sarevok, but I wasn't killed.

Do you have TotSC or any third-party game mods installed?

No
I finally figured out that I am being killed by Winski Perorate with a flame strike. Since Winski Perorate never shows himself, I can only conclude that he doesn't really exist - its only a device the game uses to kill me.
I must be doing something wrong, because now, many characters are quitting my party!
Should I install TotSC? If I do, can I complete the Baldurs Gate without doing any of the TotSC missions?

Winski Perorate shows up to auto-kill you when you have done something to break the plot. This happens when:
- You injure Belt
- You injure Liia
- Both Belt and Liia are dead
The only reason party members would leave the party abruptly is because of a reputation change:
- Evil party members leave when your rep gets too high
- Good party members leave when your rep falls too low
Taking these two together, I can only assume you must have been using damaging area-effect spells in the Duchal Palace. You must watch those area-effect spells!
Yes, you can finish the game before moving on to the TotSC areas - when you defeat Sarevok, the game makes a Final Save and should transport you to Ulgoth's Beard. However, there is one caveat - the Final Save is made
before you defeat Sarevok, so you can actually go and defeat him again.

yep, except i had an interesting bug that made the game little bit more hard to complete, Sarevok was missing

i've finished BG1 without ToSC installed and he was there, after playing ToSC loaded from the final-save and went back to the place you fight him, he wasn't there, i was not very happy since i had been waiting to go toe to toe with my fighter who had -14 AC

+++++++++++++
My strategy had been to kill Liia leaving Belt alive. I will try it without attacking Liia. At least I will when I get back next Friday.
Cheers!
