Me and a friend are currently in a MP-game of BG1 and whe intend to finish it tonight (2characters a f/t and a f/m)
Whe then want to start a BG2 MP-game,
but i can;t decide with character i want to play.
A thief has the advantage of traps, and UAI and thus a f/t can use the holy avenger.
On the other hand a mage is realy powerfull in SoA (and ToB).
Any advice?

Maybe a simple question, but what character is your friend planning to play? You could make sure that the two make a good combo.

A two character game through SoA:
Gnome cleric/thief + gnome fighter/illusionist. ( half-elven blade works also)
Half-elven ranger/cleric + fighter/mage/thief (most rounded two man party)
Halfling fighter/thief + half-elven cleric/mage.
Dwarven fighter/cleric + dwarven fighter/thief.
There are many more options of course and if you dont want to have all skills in your party then just pick whatever character you want to play and let him do the same and it will all work out well anyway.
Right now I am soloing a dwarven kensai dual-wielding frostreaver and flail of the ages. I am level 13 and doing surprisingly well. I just like the kensai kit.
Pick whatever you want!

He is bringing the beer? Hmm, at least he knows what is needed to keep playing and have fun... Anyway, I agree with what Bruce Lee has written down and else go on what your feeling says, works with me a lot.

Wouldn't it be more fun to continue with your current characters?

strategy
it depends on your game strategy. Whether you want the most powerfull party or not. As someone said above (too lazy to look it up

): YOu can manage the game with ANY character (well, maybe NOT with a bard

, ask userunfriendly about this

).
So you should IMO decide on which YOU like the most, and your friend should decide on which HE likes the most. THen you will have the most fun game of course.
But if you want a most powerfull party ever, then you probably want to look up the manymanymany threads that consider this topic here. Just do a search for "cheese" or "powergaming" or something. Or (for added fun) try to ask userunfriendly which is the most powerfull class ever. He will be pleased to tell you. (Probably it's BunBun

)
Have fun

Or maybe you can consider continuing the story and go on with the roleplaying and that would somewhat decide which characters to take.

If been thinking to continue qith our characters from bg1
a halfling f/t
and a gnome f/ilusionist.
But that brings me the same question.
Should I go for the thief (backstab UAI traps)
Or the mage

I'd go for a sorcerer...I don't like traps an have never used them.
@Stilgar: Check your PM's...
No worries,

Both are very good indeed and fun to play IMO.
