Can`t get "Find Familiar" to work...

How do you exactly do it? I learn and memorize the spell, but casting it always results in the "You can only cast this spell on the protagonist" or something message. I`ve tried casting on the ground nearby or at the caster and am pretty clueless about this.

only your created player character can have a familiar, so only he/she can cast the spell. In other words, if your PC isn't a mage, you don't get one.

IMO, it's not worth spending a spell slot on this, since you're only going to cast it, once. Find a scroll, read it, and move on.

Only the main char? Awww... I was trying to get ones for Haer`Dalis and Jansen. Hmmm... Do you suppose I could get a familiar for my Assassin with the "Use any item" ability in ToB?

I haven't tried it. Seems plausible although certain scripting/restrictions may prohibit it. give it a try.

any protagonist can cast find familiar.
drink potion, swap potion with scroll, you have jsut cast mage spell...
this also works for chain contingency and other sequencer spells, stone skin and mislead for sure.
yes, its fun to have minsc cast stone skin, before getting gargoyle boots in tob...

Imagine having 3 or 4 familiars in the backpacks. What a riot!

why thank you....
you can also try the lose the familiar trick...
supposedly it has problems, but the idea is to have pc full of junk, so every slot is filled, then accept a quest, like trade meet, where the quest giver gives you an item at end, this should bump out your familiar, tehn you keep the hp bonus, and the familiar should "decompose" away like any item in the game. but people have reported they get messages like, "you can only have one familair at a time" and they were able to pick it up again weeks later.
so I came up with a personal variant, and this should work. cast familiar, and have the left top most slot open. this should make it craw up there for house keeping. then go to quest like umar hills, where at the end of the quet, the map file relaods and changes....if you cast clairvoyance in temple ruins, you will note you need to cast again once the shadelord is dead. you have seen a map reload...
so you cast enchanted weapon spell, a total loser spell, and this should bump out your familair, and a item dropped in map reload should be dumped in the game version of a garbage file. this should also work in planar sphere before making it your stronghold, and in hell, after inserting last tear.
was planning to try out, but rathe rkeep my little drafon pet...
aerie feeds it fish eggs, she spoils the thing rotten...
