hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............
Oh, yes, I've started experimenting, too!
And it's getting even worse!!
Help!!
Some time ago someone raised the problem, maybe the answer it's well known, anyway, now I tested, so this is a sure thing.
I have a Cleric of Lathander, dualled to thief at level 14.
While the cleric class is inactive, you still cannot use non-clerical
weapons.
BUT, and it's a great
BUT, you can become PROFICIENT in them!!!!!!!!!
Obviously, in the original intentions of the programmers, this would have little effect, as you can never use them, so let the engine add proficiencies, without additional code for handling this situation.
But, with ToB, I'll reach UAI!!!!!
...............
My cleric will be able to fully use swords, bows, katanas, crossbows, scimitars, being PROFICIENT!!!!!!
The question is, will I limit myself to clerical weapons only, or will I complete my transformation to an
UserUnFriendly??
Will I lose my identity????
Doing such a thing would go against Roleplaying, would be cheesy, would be terrible, would be.....

Well if you only become proficient in the weapons you intend to use after having aquired UAI then it seems okay roleplaying to me... but then again I may be a munchkin for you know
Or you could say that you did a lot of reading on swords and such and therefore became proficient bla bla...

This is good news! Experimenting doesn't mean you have to lose your identity. Cleric/thief is one of my favourites to play around with, besides BUN BUN of course. If you are *really* roleplaying, then making him/her a cleric of Talos instead of Lathander might make more sense, IMHO.
Once you have UAI, anything goes, literally. "Clerical" weapons will become redundant.
Have fun!

@Bruce Lee:
while the cleric class is inactive you have the time to get almost all
the proficiencies...
Anyway, I think, clerics have some kind of moral restriction, don't they?
And now that I'm a thief, being so good, I never use backstab on
humans, elves and the like, ONLY vs monsters...
So I could do a similar thing...
Use bladed weapons to backstab monsters!!!
And clerical weapons vs evil humanoids.... (after all they should inflict a less "definitive" death... a club should even make the victims simply unconscious sometimes...)
Now, the game is FILLED with monsters...

actually, i never got all the "clerics will not draw blood..." thing, and that's why they use blunt weapons. i do not see the faith represented better in squatting someone on the head with a hammer better than cutting him in two with an axe. also, have you read the description of a regular morningstar? a club covered with metal spikes! how's that for not drawing blood? and some of the "blunt" weapons in the game? a spiked club, a flail that burnes and covers target with acid, in addition to cold-burning him... you see where i'm going with this
to add to my point, in 3rd edition PnP they went the way of "clerics are devoted to their duties, and initially know only the use of simple weapons". this includes spears, daggers, crossbows. same goes for thieves and mages.
so, in my veiw, there's no problem with using bladed weapons by clerics. now backstab... well... yeah, ok i guess...

morning stars, used to be called "holy water sprinklers" casue the little spikes sprinkled holy water...blood....
and back in the crusades, clerics used broadswords, like every one else...

Different orders of monks had different rules about this. The Knights templar took monastic orders but used swords. Other orders eschewed weapons altogether. The blunt weapon thing has always seemed one of those deplorable compromises -- like eating fish on Friday (because you can't eat "meat") -- that result when religion ceases to be prophetic and tries to be respectable.
But from a gaming point of view, you can see why it is necessary. Clerics don't have any restrictions other than edged weaponry so if that went away they would be fighters with spellcasting abilities. Sort of makes being a plain fighter rather pointless, except for the improved THAC0.

a cleric fighter can beat up a plain fighter any day...
draw on holy might!!!!
at high levels, makes slayer transform rather cheap...
armor of faith stacks, but after baderdash patch, only cleric fighter, includes paladins, can stack it with hardiness for 80% immunity to damage..
the cleric spells are desinged to make fighter abilitys enhanced, and heal the party, duh... but mages have th corner on offensive magic...sorcs rule all...

cleric beat up fighter?
with his direct spells sure, but not just by improved combat.
Vic would b a cool tank, if only she had more than 1 crappy attack per round (with MoD). and theres no way to improve

Dual Wield and improved haste makes her four attacks per round.
Me thinks, from a role playing point of view, restricting clerics to blunt weapons is rather silly. It's just a matter of choice and preferance over weapons.
The restriction is mainly for game balance (and frustration).

no, no, cleric fighter multi or dual class can basically bash any straight fighter, even if the levels are really disportionalte....
like lv 12/14 vs 38 kensai or wiz slayer...
cleric to fighter duals should choose cleric of latheander, the boon seriously kicks ass...
read also the aerie of destruction posts somewhere, you can seriously make her into a fighting monster

Cleric/Thief combo really rocks once you reach UAI. That's why I'm so sad that triple class F/C/T is not available in AD&D: C/T lacks punch at low levels and possible backstabbing weapons for that combo are only staff and staff mace. Not that a staff is a bad weapon, especially not in BG2, but I don't like the idea of a thief running around with a staff, just can't imagine it.
But besides that and with at least one fighter besides him C/T it's a class with enormous potential.

phantom, you got sk, right????
create a kensai, elven !!!! (must be or else it wont multi class right...), I prefer elves, myslef, and level up to whatever you want. recommend 40, with xp cap remover. do this with clua console wile still in irenicus dungeon. add g whirlwinds, and some g deathblows, for sure add at least 3 hardiness. then sk to cleric thief....
the kensai kit stores its to hit and thaco bonuses in affects as lines of code, if you have the codes in a sk char, you will retain them...for real fun, choose cleric thief, then add assassin kit...whoo hoo!!! energy blades of fun!!!
you now have a kensai, assassin thief..
this is the min procedure for creating bun bun, except bun bun is seriously more worked on, included is edited innates and death bringer assault...
