HELP!! Underpowered Mage

Wondering if anyone can help me out on this, My character appears to be underpowered and I have no idea why!?
My main Character is a Human Invoker level 13, intelligence 18.
He can memorise 6 1st level spells and 3 6th level spells.
I just picked up Edwin who as you probably know is a 12th level conjurer when u pick him up also intelligence 18.
However Edwin, even though he is 1 lvl behind my character can memorise something like 7 or 8 1st level spells and 5 or so 6th level spells. A lot more than my character!
Can anyone tell me why this is so?? And what can be done to restore my character if needs be?
They are both specialist mages and I took all their items off.
I just can't account for the disparity.
Thanks a million.

Edwin has some special items that give him more spells, i don't think you can make a better normal mage yourself.
Try a wild mage or a sorcerer if you want to be stronger than him.

That ancestral necklace that Edwin wears gives him extra spells at several levels. Note that if you kill him, the necklace vanishes.

Edwin..
Yeah I wondered why I could not get it away from him..
kind of unbalancing really. I couldn't think of a more powerful offensive mage than an invoker and he smashes my character into next week, sort of makes my invoker obsolete u know what I mean?
Is he more powerful than every other NPC mage as well then?
U sure there is no way to get it off him?

You could use ShadowKeeper

.
The single mage class is pretty weak, so it's good that one NPC is any use at it like Edwin is. You shouldn't really pick a Mage for your PC. I suggest either a Sorcerer (My favorite class) or a Fighter/Mage.

FWIW, you can shadow keeper it in. Never done it myself.

Shadow Keeper
Following the readme instructions, you can open up a saved game.
1. Click on "Inventory"
2. Click on "Change Item" in the "neck" slot or any of your empty slots.
3. From "Item Browser", look for Edwin's Amulet under "Necklace" and click on that.
4. Save that game (defaulted as XXX[Edited 0001]
5. Close the program, go to that edited game in SoA. Edwin's amulet should be there.

Hey thanks for your help guys. Shadow keeper worked like a charm.
I just stole it off him, I think that is perfectly responable being a Neutral Evil Character..

It's hard to create a better PC Mage than Edwin, since the number of spells is the most important things to a Mage. Edwin also has a good opposition school (even though the only spell I really missed with my Invoker was Chaos). However, a PC Mage gets a few advantages as well. You can get more HPs thanks to the Familiar. You can get the Mage's Stronghold and items like the Ring of Wiz (otherwise only available if you have Jaheira in your party). And you can finally get a better AC.

Yeah, Edwins so medicore in all of his other stats. And being a straight mage (as opposed to any number of duels) he cant use a bow (not that itd matter with that atrocious dex). Fourtantly the sheer number of spells he has keeps him busy.
I personnally would never steal the amulet from him. Kind of makes having him pointless in light of the other more useful mages (Jan, Aerie, Imeon)

it works great...but not good for sorc, or (heh heh....) sorc kensai.
you get so many spell slots its sick...
sorcs need the amulet of pwer for teh vocolize and lvel drain protection and enhanced casting speed....
fighter, cleirc mages, for the pc, its great, since you have so many spells its sick, and you also have contingency neg plane protection and vocolize...
with ring of wiz and circle of netheril, and with use any item hacked in, bards floves, you can have too many spells...
heck if you dont want to apply kensai kit tot mage fighter cleric, you apply conjuror kit, and get as many spells as edwin, and cleric spells and greater whirlwind, and g deathblow...killer....

hell as far as I am concerned you should be able to steal whatever you like from another character.
He is an evil character as well, his character uses people, just one evil character to another really.
As I am playing a straight mage I don't need him, so why not use him and get rid of him?
perfectly reasonable to me.
