I never thought about that until now... Good point, Stilgar. Perhaps it offers protection from critical hits with missile weapons?

That would be to weird, blocking arrows with you're head.
A shield ok, that would make sence.

I was thinking more along the line of getting a bullet or arrow in the head. As to what critical hit does: according to the description it "always" hits and does double damage.

I believe you are right Eerhardt.
As for bullets or arrows to the head, I sometimes see in-game messages which said, "XXX is protected by helmet from critical hits" or something like that. These are on rolls less than 20.

afaik a critical hit (20, sometimes 19 rolled) always hits, no matter if wearing a helm or not. But the double damage is only dealt when not having protection from crit hit, otherwise just normal.

@Thrar: so critical hit doesn't do double damage against anyone wearing a helmet

... Of course, not many enemies do (except relatively low-level enemies like Hobgoblins and the like)

.
@Baldursgate fan: you can get the critical hit on 19 by specialising in Two-Handed Weapon Style and wielding a 2-handed weapon (not a ranged weapon). Can you recall whether the rolls you were talking about were below 19?

Single weapon style also gives you criticals more often.. btw most "important" enemy have an undropable helmet with no animation so double damage dont happen much

I dont like that "critical hit averted by helmet" rule. Seems stupid. Just walk into battle wearing nothing other then a helmet and suffer no critical hits? An arrow through your heart should be as critical as an arrow in the head IMO.

No, none below that. In the thick of the fight, there were many messages on screen. But I did remember that on critical hits, the damage done was about double that of normal hits. Most of my enemies have protective headgear on them, though like Bruce said, it doesn't make much sense.
I guess Bioware didn't always implement the rules strictly, which is a good thing for us!
Cheers buddy.
