Golems, for me.

All the others can be difficult without tactics, but there are a number of ways to take each of them down (esp. dragons). Hence, they are interesting.

Until you get Crom Faeyr, Golems are hard to hit, harder to damage, haste themselves, slow *you*, and are immune to almost every spell. Fighting them involves whittling away at them as quickly as possible, and little else. Plus, don't get me started on Clay Golems and their required blunt weaponry.

In short, Golems are *annoying* for the first half of the game.

Clay Golems give me the creeps. But still Beholders are the toughest.

I can beat many monsters to death with shear force and numbers, but the most annoying thing is when you get imprisoned by those elder orbs. One minute you are reflecting rays back to them, the next you get imprisoned, that's just pain in the neck.

Even dragons, umber hulks, golems and minflayers can be killed without much preparation (unless it is insane and/or in TOB).

Yeah beholders hands down worst. You basically have to resort to some form of cheese to clear that lair in the underdark (traps, shield of baldurcheese, summoning festivals, etc). Solo beholders dont tend to live long enough to be annoying, but the swarms of them in the underdark lair are a PITA.

I...HATE...DRACONIS!

Heh, even Draconis is far less troublesome than a swarm of Beholders, Elder Orbs, Death Tyrants, and Hive Mothers.

atleast in my newest game with HD, ano-whine, keldorn, imoen, jaheira. atleast in the beginning adamantium golems almost made me mad! i had the sling of everard on jaheira and she was the only one who could hit the damn thing from afar, it took 15 minutes because of the damn phys res. i HATE those buggers

don't have TOB, but clearing out the beholder dungeon on my first run through without cloak of reflection, or balduran shield was the toughest thing in the whole game.

beholders can be easitly had using arrows of detonation or frag skulls with greater deathblow...here is a great trick, i just learned from a very charming fellow named kurisian...(?)...

spell immunity abjuration will not only make you immune to imprison, but will make you immune to the beholders worst weapon, anti magic ray!!!!!

i hit the acid katana guy, sola mod, with hive mother behoder anti magic ray, a bun bun specialty, thinking, "i have you now!!!" and the spell immunity stayed up!!!!

wtf...until i realized he had spell immunity abjuration up , and almost all of the spell dispellers in the game, incuding spell stike are abjuration, only the very sucky ruby ray is alteration, so it makes sense spell immunity abjuration will protect you from hive mother imprison, but anti magic ray too...

will test tonite.

i am actually standing in front of the beholder lair, and plan to give them a royal drubbing...

mage fighter dual is best, if you no like bun bun, once you get to quest level, in small party, you cna invest in some g deathblows and clua in some arrows of detonation...

beholders? no problem - cloak of reflection thingy and ring of free action, and my main character could take them out easily

dragons? i hate 'em, but hey - they're meant to be barstewards, so i can live with that

golems - i never met many, and was supremely lucky whenever i did (windspear dungeon with the mob of them near the well? they got stuck, and the adamantium one nuked the others with that area effect spell they have :D )

mindflayers? the first time i met one of those buggers i took a beating, but when got to the lair i had levelled up loads, and took em all out with my main dude and summonings :)

however, umber hulks in the early part of the game annoy the hell outta me! they're tough, strong, fast, and use physical attacks. thus, there is not much you can do to prepare other than slap on a chant or protection from evil or whatever and hope...

Draconis, I remember once upon a time, I got my butt wallop 15 times in one day by him. I pondered upon giving up, but in the end the cheese reign supreme.

However, it is just one out of seven that is hard. Beholders are in vast numbers and they are all hard.

not to toot my own horn (toot toot) but the only thing i have trouble with is Flayers

i hate them

all my tactics fail against them

the main thing the the brain munch cos nothing stops it (or am i wrong?)

bastard flayer!

the brain munch is pretty horrendous (especially when your mage gets it, and they lose half their spells  ) but let your summoned moinions do the fighting while you throw magical axes at their tentacled heads - or indeed any other ranged weapon you like :)

Definitely Mindflayers. All of a sudden my 150HP fighter can only take 2-3 hits. Not many fighters out there with 18 int. They also have good magic resistance, so mages can't kill lots of them quickly either. And they're ugly and they smell.

Improved Mind Flyers (Solaufein Mod)

Hrm. Using cloak of reflection or shield of Balduran counts as being forced to cheese IMO. No judgement there btw cause like I said big packs of beholders/orbs are very tough without some form of cheese.

There are tons of things to defend against mind flayers psionic attacks. Chaotic commands, potions, greenstone amulet, berserk, etc. all do the job. Take your best fighter type put him in your best armor, maybe slap a haste on him and watch him tear through mindflayers. Mindflayers have poor hps, poor AC, and, most importantly, poor THACO. They only hit on a critical if you get a good AC. (-15 is very easy to get in the underdark even without impr invis). If necessary throw in potions of mind focusing or genius to enable you to take more hits. If this is going too slow add a second big AC tank with chaotic commands or bring in the missile weapons once your tank has them occupied.

Glod, the sola mod improved mindflayers are evil...almost as bad as dragons...

they can d gate, so send in summons to whack no longer works, they d gate to the sorc or mage...

they can see invisible, so mislead is not so hot, anymore...

they can go improved invisible, so they can attack "blink" mode..

ballistic attack, ego drain, life drain, and they have a bunch of psionic badass abilities...

much more aggressive, closing in and inflicting int drain whenever possible...

all in all, seriouly nasty...

you need potions of mind focus....int boost, and dex boost, you'll need the ac bonus, trust me...

chaotic command and ring of free action together...

just to have a decent chance...

Mind Flayers. Hate them. end of story.

Draconis was a pain too, till I started casting insect plague on him. That one simple spell works wonders for me. :D

All I hate is the Illithid brain-sucking abilities. Golems are easy to knock out with a party with well maintaned and quality weapons, like knocking out them Dragons with the special "dragon" weapons loaded up on Minsc, smash all those annoying Vampires and undead things with the Mace of Distruption +1 and Amulet of Power equiped on Anomen, get Drizzt's Scimitar +3 for Jaheira (by CLUA), and send Aerie in with the Staff of Power and you're all set!

The people above are right: strategies are the key to winning most battles with the big guys. I just foughts a lich that summoned two Banshees (ick.), four Skeleton Warriors, and six Skeleton Archers in ToB proving once again that coming in prepared is the key!

But I HATE Mind Flayers...

I didnt see "upgraded mindflayers" on the vote list =P. Only just started my first time with that mod so I'll see how it goes. The description sure makes them sound worse than before but it also sounds like the same basic strategy will work unless the THAC0 got better.
